No chance of washout for concert P3 Your Place, Your Paper Northland man conquers Cook Strait swim P5 Northern News Fighting for workmates Wednesday, April 27, 2016 BAYLEYMOOR A Ngati Hine bushman will fight for a memorial trophy to remember fallen colleagues in the forestry industry. Kaikohe resident Alex Critchfield, of Blackheart Logging, will fight in the Lee Gar discipline at the April 30 event at the Bay of Islands Copthorne Resort in Waitangi. It will also raise funds for the Radius Baycare Home and Hospital in Haruru Falls. Another forestry worker will challenge Critchfield in a bout of three two-minute rounds. The Hingatanga (fallen) trophy is being carved from a piece of Totara by the whakairo carving workshop at Ngawha Corrections Centre. There have been four deaths in the forestry industry this year, including one in a forestry block near Pakotai, around 37km south of Kaikohe. Critchfield says he is looking forward to the event. ‘‘I like that it’s fighting for a good cause. ‘‘It’s also a big honour to fight for those that have fallen.’’ Critchfield, who turns 61 the day after the event, says he is ‘‘blessed’’ to still be able to continue fighting in the sport he loves. Event organiser and Bay of Islands Lee Gar Thai Boxing Cub coach Nik Jessop says bushmen are very passionate, strong and resilient people. ‘‘You combine that with one of their own that has fallen. You get a passionate response from any bushman. ‘‘Especially when it’s in their own area, they feel it.’’ He says this is a positive way to remember their fellow workers. This is the third time the event has been run. Jessop says the kaupapa around the event, is they decide which cause they will support and all profit will be donated to that. He hopes funds raised from Kerikeri’s Latest Showhome Come and see what we can build for you Far North Office: (09) 407 3441 0800 42 45 46 www.gjgardner.co.nz GJ-SH-76-FN0215-2MCL A boxing event at the Bay of Islands Copthorne Resort on April 30 will honour forestry workers who have lost their lives on the job. ‘‘It’s also a big honour to fight for those that have fallen.’’ Alex Critchfield this year’s event will purchase outdoor seating for Baycare. Lee Gar is a Thai boxing disci- pline that engages every part of your body. Jessop says the sport can pro- vide a great gateway for youth as not everyone can play rugby or rugby league. It teaches self discipline and respect, he says. Around 20 fights will take place from children to novices right through to senior fighters. Doors open at 1pm. Adults $25 and kids $10.
