6 NORTHERN NEWS, JANUARY 8, 2014 From home gym to gold medals Last year was a show stopper for powerlifter Dean Price. Competing at the Oceania and Commonwealth Powerlifting Championships, Dean came away with five gold medals, a silver and a bronze. He also broke three Oceania and three Commonwealth records at the championships held at the Vodafone Events Centre, Auckland from December 3 to 8. Dean, who is 18 and from Waimate North, took up the sport of power lifting just 18 months ago, training on a home gym and bench press. Originally competing in the under-74kg subjunior age group he took the sport by storm. Since then he has gone from strength to strength. He competed at the world champs in Lithuania in May where he placed sixth and set a New Zealand record lifting 140kg against his 75kg body weight at the North Island Bench Press Championships in September. Next on the cards is the 2015 Commonwealth Games in Vancouver followed by the 2016 world championships in Texas. If you are interested in sponsoring Dean email dean firstname.lastname@example.org.
