Okaihau College year 13 student Matavai Taulangau, 18, has gained top results in NCEA graphics. He gained five excellences plus scholarship. To gain scholarship level means that he is in the top three per cent in New Zealand. Matavai designed an interactive book for a special needs student to educate on how to behave appro- priately while attending the school ball. The book contains moveable parts and textures, making it tactile and interactive. He also created a point of sale display and a visual advertise- ment. The main character in the book is based on Hannah Baines, a senior special needs student last year, who has Down syndrome. Matavai will be attending AUT and completing a BA in graphic design this year. Karen Paraone is the teacher in charge of graphics at Okaihau College and is proud of Matavai's achievements. He worked hard and gained the results that he deserves. We are a decile two rural col- lege and to gain this top national result again is an amazing achievement for our school.'' In 2008 Malcolm Bell gained the same results with his project Te Waharoa O Okaihau College''.
