The New Zealand Pony Clubs Association Dress- age Championships were held in Taupo over Janu- ary 19 and 20 and proved to be a great success for Northland riders. The combined team of junior and senior riders finished fifth overall in the championship event but winning the team competition were juniors Madeline Banks of Keri- keri, Mihi Shepherd and Lauren Kendrick of Whangarei and Rebecca Donovan from Kaitaia. Senior riders Amber Jobbitt, Izzy Neville and Hayley Braithwaite also placed in individual tests against very strong com- petition. Coach Julie Harrison was pleased with how all the riders performed at the event and very proud of the juniors' win in their teams section. Winds gusting up to 35 knots buffeted the Bay of Islands Yacht Club's 46th annual Waitangi to Whangaroa race on January 26. After rounding Cape Wiki Wiki the fleet had confused seas for most of the race with one boat losing a mast and small breakages reported. Taking both line and handicap honours in a record time of 2hr 34m 40sec was Bare Essenti- als, a 17-metre Robinson design owned by Boyd Robinson and crewed by Dave Cochran, Guy Robinson, Grant and Iris Bartlett, A.B. and J.P. The first multihull, in 3hr 06m 30sec, was Synchronicity, a cata- maran crewed by Bill Kidman and his family. Black Jack, a refurbi- shed 18m Spencer crewed by Phil McNeill and his family was the fastest in the non-racing cruising division. For full results see Scores andDraws. Top times at pool The 2013 Northland Swimming Champion- ships took place January 18 to 20 at the Kauri Coast Community Pool in Dargaville. Bay of Islands Swim- ming Club sent a large squad to the champion- ships. Ten-year-old Logan Gaualofa and Bailey Maihi, 15, championship 50m freestyle records in their age groups. Jeremy Elliott, 11, won gold in all eight events that he entered. The swim of the meet goes to 13-year-old Jake Murray in the 100m Fly. He swam a 91G2 second personal best to win gold and qualify for the Natio- nal Division II Cham- pionships. See sports ground.co.nz.
