The Reserve Bank of New Zea- land (RBNZ) may have to look at hiking rates earlier than current expectations after the latest data shows a surge in business confidence and the housing market at a record high, analysts say. Business confidence im- proved sharply in the fourth quarter of 2012. The New Zealand Institute of Economic Research s quarterly survey of business opinion showed a seasonally-adjusted net 19 per cent of firms now expect business conditions to improve over the next six months, while 8 per cent of com- panies believe trading activity was up in the fourth quarter. The survey implies a solid expansion in the fourth quarter and strong advances into the early part of 2013, BNZ econ- omist Craig Ebert said. If the next survey proves equally robust, the Reserve Bank will soon be having sec- ond thoughts about keeping its cash rate so very low. The strong business survey complements real estate data, which saw the national median house price jump 10 per cent on the year in December to a record $389,000. The Reserve Bank last month identified a potential housing bubble as a possible reason that could lead it to having to hike the official cash rate earlier than signalled in its forecasts for 90-day bank bills. RBNZ Governor Graeme Wheeler faces balancing the uncertain global outlook with a boiling hot housing market. Fire safety advised With summer marking the beginning of one of New Zealand s peak fire periods, fire protection specialist Wormald is encouraging house- holders to consider fire safety and assess poten- tial fire hazards around their homes. Peter Fermor, Wor- mald MD says house- holders should take the necessary precautions to prevent a fire, and he offers the following tips: Ensure smoke alarms are installed and in pro- per working order Equip your home with appropriate fire extingu- ishers and fire blankets and place them in access- ible locations. When working out- doors, be aware of any fire restrictions that you should be compliant with. Keep the barbecue monitored while lit and once finished, turn off the gas cylinder and let the remaining gas in the pipe run through the barbecue before shutting it off. Allow hot ashes or coals to cool for 48 hours before removing them. Always keep lighters and matches away from children. The New Zealand Fire Service has developed an online tool to work out and highlight the escape routes in your home. Visit www.fire.org.nz. Lack of land the problem New Zealand s biggest building company, Flet- cher Building, last week confirmed ACT s view on housing unaffordability. On One News, a Flet- cher Challenge represen- tative confirmed they could build significantly more [houses] but their biggest constraint is land availability . It s lack of land that is the biggest driver behind increasing house prices, ACT leader John Banks said.
