Carla Ruifrok is the unsuccessful candidate. The election comes at a time that the Whangaroa Health Service Trust Board is under fire for its financial management, service deliv- ery and handling of staff issues. The Northland District Health Board confirmed last week that an audit will be conducted by the Ministry of Health, following a com- munity call for an audit of the operation. Northland District Health Board general manager Kim Tito says data has been pro- vided by the trust, fully com- pliant with the process. Trust chair Janny Free- man says the trust welcomes the audit, saying it has nothing to hide. An initial advertised elec- tion of a Totara North rep- resentative was postponed after complaints about the procedure but this was seen as symptomatic of a wider problem and a lack of trust in the community. It s hoped that a ministerial inquiry will clear the air. The trust has been criti- cised for its involvement in a failed business venture. In defence the trust says it was the trust s hand up not handout philosophy that led to what is seen as a mis- guided project, involving a catering contract at Whangaroa Sport Fishing Club. The venture resulted in an $85,000 loss to the trust and the matter is with lawyers. Far North schools left out of extra health spending Mental anguish: Far North schools will miss out on a slice of the government's $10 million to boost health services at schools. The government roll-out of $10 million for school kids preventative health over the next four years does not include in- creased funding for schools in the Far North. Health Minister Tony Ryall says 22 decile three secondary schools will be providing new school-based health ser- vices this term. And in total all 47 decile three schools in New Zealand will receive the services currently provided to decile 1 and 2 schools. The government al- ready funds $5.6m a year for a school nursing ser- vice in 135 decile 1 and 2 secondary schools, alter- native education facili- ties and teen parent units across the country -- this includes physical and mental assessments. Northland College, de- cile 1, Bay of Islands Col- lege, decile 1, Kaitaia College, decile 2, Whang- aroa College, decile 2, and Okaihau College, decile 2, will not see any new funding for health in this roll-out. Nor will decile 7 Keri- keri High School. However, the govern- ment s $62m Youth Men- tal Health Project is investing $23m over four years into expanding mental health funding to provide more services for young people aged 12 to 19 in the community. School based services are already being pro- vided in 14 decile 1 and 2 secondary schools, alter- native education facili- ties and teen parent units in Northland. As part of the Youth Mental Health project $57,000 was allocated to the Northland District Health Board in 2012/13 to expand the current mental health services to reach young people aged 12 to 19. There will be increases in this funding over the following three years. Northland DHB Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services and Youth Alcohol and Other Drug services will work to reduce their wait times and improve their followup care, the minis- try of health says. An initiative is being developed to make online e-therapy available.
