From left: Holly King, Clara Autet, Alice Autet, Hanna Geerisch, Phillipine Stalline, Anna Clarke and Kate Sheldon. The start of summer has seen much small boat activity in the Kerikeri area and no doubt some have been inspired by our Olym- pic sailors and their terrific welcome by the town. Kerikeri Cruising Club s open day attracted a number of new faces including a few Kerikeri High School girls -- the basis of a team that has expanded to more than a dozen very keen and rapidly improving sailors. Training led to their involvement in the club s Team Training Regatta at the end of term -- a consider- able success attracting five teams from Auckland North and three from Kerikeri. Regular Saturday morning sailing continues to draw increasing numbers of young sailors and it s encouraging to welcome the active and helpful parents who make the sessions such a success. The Kerikeri Spring Regatta had a good fleet of Splashes, Mistrals, Star- lings, Optimists and A class catamarans with a wide range of ages involved. A holiday sailing week run by junior instructors will be held January 21 to 25; the second part of the Learn to Sail sessions at Lake Man- uwai starts February 9 and a number of small regattas will be held during the sec- ond half of summer. If you are interested in any of these activities contact Derry Godbert on 09 407 8058 or email Godbert@xtra.co.nz. Marlin wins prize Striped winner: Tony Paget on the right with skipper Graham Paget, catches the first marlin of the New Year in Redwoods Dental Practice Fishing Contest. The annual Redwoods Dental Practice Fishing Contest for the first marlin of the year was held on January 4 for the Whangaroa Sport Fishing Club. In perfect conditions, over 80 contestants took part at the start of the New Year to see who could land the first marlin. The winner, with a 140.8kg striped marlin, was Tony Paget, a pretty good effort on a 24kg line. Tony caught the fish in Doubtless Bay aboard the boat Black Label, skip- pered by Graham Paget, and took the $750 prize.
