We had a fantastic time re-visiting special places and old haunts which meant so much to me growing up in Kaikohe in the 50s and 60s. Our accommodation was the Mid North Inn where we were hosted by a Ngati Porou couple from the East Coast, Lindal and Michelle Ngata and their family. The accommodation was comfortable, the service and hospitality great. There are certainly a lot more empty spaces in the business area of Broadway from when I lived in Kaikohe, while the development in the Marino blocks area is good to see. To all those businesses and their families who continue to keep our town humming, a sincere thank you. My daughters and I cycled Te Pou Herenga track to Okaihau and back and recommend that hikoi for those who get an opportunity to haveago...it's an awesome experience for families. The Hone Heke Memorial reserve is still a magic place to stand in the early morning to survey and acknowledge in prayer the vista of a land and place that one is proud to call home. Early in December, there was a letter in the Gisborne Herald written by a recent arrival from Kaikohe expressing his good luck in finding a secure job in Gisborne and sharing interesting thoughts on the hub of the North, and the attitude of a key personality there, to Kaikohe. My family went home to look for ourselves and we thoroughly enjoyed the time with family, friends and the places in Kaikohe; we love it. Mauri ora.Para whanau Gisborne Late change There is no argument that Kaikohe needs a change for the better. The commitment to explore the possibilities of a Business Improvement District has been long-discussed at business association meetings and there was generally a consensus of support for the proposal. The BID proposal had the support of the Kaikohe/Hokianga Community Board and gratefully received seeding funds from the council. This is of real significance, as Kaikohe is not known as being the flavour of the month'' by some. A very tight timetable was adopted to enable the various steps to be implemented in time for the legal mechanisms to be in place for the new financial year. It is disappointing to see the opposition to the concept at the eleventh hour. Why did those with genuine concerns not raise them at the well- advertised stakeholder meetings? The Kaikohe Business Association does an excellent job of prom- oting the town with very limited resources provided by a very small section of the business community. The BID process would ensure that all who benefit would contribute equitably, democratically arrived at by consensus that would include all the bigger players and those who have not participated to date. In short, a bigger pool with greater ability to effect changes for improving the town. This would not necessarily be restricted to promotional activities but those that were necessary or desirable, even to handling town maintenance for the council. Just because the council is the collecting agent doesn't mean that it will control the funds. That responsibility, along with money, is passed straight to the business association to be directed to whatever purpose or project the members decided on. The system has worked remarkably well in other places; it can do the same for Kaikohe. Shaun Reilly Kaikohe Thanks Nga Mahi Mo Te Tangata Trust would like to thank our co- conspirators for another day of sun, surf and mayhem at Ahipara during our Koha Day Surf's Up series last month. To Te Hauora o te Hiku o te Ika, Te Hiku Media, Far North REAP, Far North Surf Rescue and our fellow surfers, without whom we would be unable to hold this event, and to all the people who promoted, passed on the information and generally participated, kia ora. But the biggest shout out must go to our brave participants. Standup surfer of the day goes to Vaughan Whitlow. Yes, he stood up numerous times. Vaughan you are the man. He was chased for enthusiasm though by the crew who arrived from Whangarei to take part in this Far North initiative. Thanks also to George from Te Kohanga Trust camp site for providing a safe and hospitable place to hold the event. Thank you everyone. Lorna McCraith Community Development REAP
