Delicious local wines and food, great entertainment and good times are the trademarks of the Ocean & Orchard Wine & Food Festival. This year's event will be held on the Kerikeri Domain on Saturday 23rd February from 11am to 6pm. Every ticket sold goes into the draw on the day for a fantastic overseas holiday provided by Trixie's United Travel. This is truly an event for all ages. A new feature this year is the provision of reserved seating. Book a table for up to 10 people and a seat will be waiting for you when you arrive and will be yours for the rest of the day. The reserved tables will be in the shade of the Orangewood Marquee, close to all the action. By popular demand the timing of the festival has been brought forward to include lunch and an early dinner. There will be a great variety of cuisine including seafood, vegetarian, meat-lovers, fruit and desserts, all of which can be matched by the fabulous local wines and liqueurs. Smoothies, juices, coffee and free water will be available. Asupervisedchildren'splayarea from noon until 4pm ensures a rela xed afternoon for mums and dads. The Turner Centre is the alternative wet weather venue. A great line-up of entertainment is planned starting with some smooth jazz from our very own Bay Windjammers, an interlude on guitar by Jason Tito, then on to the reggae and r&b which is the signature of The Hewson Project. Later in the afternoon both Haylee Nichola & The Frettz, followed by ever-popular Furious 3, will have you on your feet. This year will see the introduction of the Orangewood Senior Mastercook and Orangewood Junior Mastercook competitions. You will have time to practise at home before wowing the crowds on the day with your creations. And the Ocean & Orchard Wearable Arts Competition sponsored by Keoghans Showcase Jewellers, too, is open to all ages. Context: Heiwari Johnson's Nga Kete E Toru is among the works on display at Blackspace. Art not waiting to be noticed A pop-up art gallery in Kohukohu puts local art into context, one of its curators says. Blackspace is a Maori art gallery situated in the historic bank build- ing in the north Hokianga town. The gallery was born out of a desire to bring Maori artists together. And is inspired by the sentiment Waiho i te toipoto, kaua i te toiroa'. (Let us keep close together, not wide apart.) Heiwari Johnson, one of the co- curators and a graduate of the bach- elor of applied arts degree from Nor- thtec, says he believes that local artists need to be proactive. If we're waiting to be noticed by institutional curators or galleries we'll be waiting in vain.'' He also says that the benefit of having a Maori gallery is that the work has the opportunity to be viewed against its contemporaries, rather than as exotic'' or other''. He says that by putting in the hard yards -- painting, branding, signage, contracts -- all the things you don't learn at art school'' and by procuring remarkable Maori artists, some of whom who do not usually exhibit in mainstream galleries -- the owner of the building, Jane Stones and the three curators Mr Johnson, Lewis Manuera and Dawn Harris, have created a uniquely Maori space with many truly beau- tiful works of art, from large-scale carved pieces to small, intricate jewellery with a mixture of both well-known and gifted, yet to be dis- covered Maori artists. Blackspace gallery is open from 10am till 4pm daily until February 13.
