By PAUL OWEN The Piaggio Group went on the attack at the Milan Motorcyle Show releasing key new products likely to com- prise a substantial chunk of its sales during 2013. The trio were the 1200cc Aprilia Caponord adventure tourer, the Moto Guzzi Cali- fornia 1400 and the Vespa 946. The group is Europe s most prolific bike-maker and recently added the 2012 World Superbike Champion- ship to its war-chest of 101 world road-racing titles. Here we take a look at the new Aprilia Caponord 1200 which perhaps Aprilia should have built first with its big- block 90-degree V-twin engine. For where the market for big-block supermotos is com- paratively limited, placing this 128bhp liquid-cooled V-twin in an adventure tourer gives Aprilia the opportunity to poach sales from the world s most popular motorcycle, the BMW R1200GS. Not only does the Caponord promise more power and ligh- ter mass than the heavily- revised 2013 GS, it also has a similar emphasis on elec- tronic sophistication. There is semi-active sus- pension, adapting to riding conditions in accordance to the selection of several rider settings, three maps to select from for the ride-by-wire throttle, two-channel ABS brakes complete with an off- switch, cruise control and a traction control system with three intervention settings. The adjustable screen and optional hard luggage system should attract the interest of touring riders in Aprilia s first adventure bike. However, the 17-inch front wheel will immediately define it as a bike that likes to stay on the road and become more of a rival for Ducati s racy Multistrada than the evergreen BMW. Generous gift to motor city Classic Corvette: Charity begins at home. General Motors chair- man and chief execu- tive Dan Akerson is giving up his 1958 Chevy Corvette to help Habitat for Humanity to build houses in Detroit. The car is one of only 510 Corvettes painted in Regal Turqoise. Fitted with a rare hardtop, it has a 180kW V8 and recently had its body- work, interior and instrument panel restored. The vintage car will be auctioned off on January 18 in Scotts- dale, Arizona with all the proceeds going towards the charity. Crushing blow for car owner Gutted and crushed: Lamp post falls on restored Lincoln. After spending about NZ$15,000 restoring a 1990 Lincoln Town Car to its original condition, Chris Downes of Notting- hamshire in England discovered his car had been crushed by a con- crete lamp post that had been struck by another driver. The Lincoln and its Ford LTD and Mercury Marquis clones were made in their hundreds of thousands in the United States from 1981 to 2011, but are rare in the United Kingdom. I just can t believe it, I m absolutely gutted, 26-year-old Downes says.
