Eight guides and their leader Jo Sadgrove spent 11G2 hours on Monday night picking up rubbish along a 1km section of Waimate North Rd near Bay of Islands Airport. They filled four large rubbish sacks with mostly drink bottles and cans. A year ago they picked up enough litter to fill seven rubbish sacks on the same section of road. They plan to make it an annual event. Big rise in number of new houses ' This is the largest quarterly increase for 10 years. ' Blair Cardno Statistics New Zealand spokesman The number of new houses con- sented in October 2012 was the highest for any month in more than four years according to Statistics New Zealand. There were 1639 new houses consented in October, the high- est number seen since May 2008. When we compare these figures with the same time last year, the number of new houses in October increased 32 per cent,'' Statistics New Zealand spokesman Blair Cardno says. There is a clear trend over the last 19 months, which shows an increase in new hou- ses, both including and exclud- ing apartments,'' Mr Cardno says. Housing consent numbers for October 2012, compared with October 2011, were: 1639 new houses, including apartments (up 32 per cent) 1471 new houses (up 28 per cent) 168 new apartments (up from 89). Canterbury led the increase in new houses in October 2012, up 122 from a year ago. Across New Zealand, the number of apartments rose by 79.Following a moderate increase in September 2012, the seasonally adjusted number of new houses, including apart- ments, had a small decrease of 1.5 per cent in October 2012. Excluding apartments the seasonally adjusted number of new houses decreased 2.0 per cent. In Statistics New Zealand data released December 5, the seasonally adjusted volume of building activity increased 9.6 per cent in the September 2012 quarter. This is the largest quarterly increase for 10 years,'' Mr Cardno says. While the earthquake rebuild in Canterbury contri- buted to this, residential build- ing work in the upper North Island also experienced growth.'' For the country overall, non- residential building activity increased 12.4 per cent, while residential building activity increased 7.1 per cent. One year left to watch old-style television Television in Northland is going digital in 12 months which means everyone in the region who wants to watch television after December 1, 2013 will need Freeview or SKY. Are you ready? If you aren't already digital now is the time to start look- ing at your options and take action,'' Going Digital spokes- man Greg Harford says. All television in New Zea- land is going digital in stages with Hawke's Bay and the West Coast of the South Island leading the way as the first regions to make the move ear- lier this year. More than eight out of 10 homes in Northland have already made the move to digi- tal TV and are enjoying better pictures and more channels. You don't need a new tele- vision as any set can go digital with the right set-top box or television with Freeview built- in, together with a UHF aerial or a satellite set-top box and satellite dish. It is important to remember that every television you want to continue watching after December 1, 2013, whether it is in the bedroom, living room or shed will need to be digital. If you want to continue to receive and record television programmes using your cur- rent DVD or video recorder it will also need to go digital,'' says Mr Harford.
