There s $500 up for grabs in Paihia s Annual Chair Competition. Those of us who have been to Paihia will no doubt have seen last year s winner, the eye- catching creation outside Gold n Gifts. Now here s your chance to add a little flair and creativity to the town and win $500 in the process. 2011 winners Fiona and Rex of Gold n Gift say the chair has been a great success. Customers comment on what a bright and colourful addition it is to the street, shoppers are definitely attracted to it and in turn love the con- nection with the stock in the shop, they say. Judges will be looking for chairs that have the following qualities: Solid construction suitable to be left out on a permanent basis A design aspect having a strong connection to your business/organis- ation Creativity, quirkiness and originality How well the chair adds to it s surrounding. Chairs must be com- pleted and on display ready for judging by Wednesday, December 12.The winner of the com- petition will be announced at the Christ- mas Parade, Thursday, December 13. For entry forms go to focuspaihia.org.nz. A colourful place to rest and see waterfront Colour artwork: Volunteers Lesley Jones, left, and June Jacobson with the Paihia Phantom Placemakers Project for a mosaic chair. Mosaic chair: Land meets sea theme adds fishy details. Ice-cream: Another aspect of the mosaic chair. Hidden away in secret places Phantom Place- makers are busily work- ing on Paihia s Mosaic Chair Project which has moved into top position in the line up of exciting and creative improve- ments to Paihia. In October, with the concrete structure pre- pared, project driver Robyn Parker and her team set to work on the design plan. The theme is land meets sea and once moved to its permanent site at the Paihia water- front, the giant wave- shaped creation will offer classy seating with a prime view. In true phantom style and to accommodate volunteers available time, mosaic designs are being worked on at home and glued into place when ready. A giant mosaic mania is planned for the final stage of the creation -- scores of volunteers will apply all the background mosaic pieces over one weekend in December. Also working behind the scenes is a team of volunteers whose skills include engineering, con- creting, building and haulage. Wooden slat seating will be added and it s estimated the chair will be ready for the town s Christmas parade on December 13. The finished product will make lingering at the waterfront a colour- ful experience. Volunteer driven phantom placemaker projects are an initiative of Focus Paihia, and fun- ded by the Paihia Op Shop. The goal of Focus Paihia is to see Paihia become an exceptional place to live, work and visit.
