The annual Waipapa Rotary Club Book Fair last Friday and Saturday was a triumph. Rotary spokesman Geoff Tilley said takings were up 20 per cent on the first day and exceeded the expecta- tions. All books were priced at $2 and proceeds from the book fair go to chari- table causes. Booklovers were in for a surprise as also on offer was a large collec- tion of teddy bears kindly donated to Rotary. Bears from all walks of life, from tiny to lifesize were on sale and proved to be popular items. Proceeds from the ted- dies will be donated to Riding for the Disabled. Waipapa Rotary Club would like to thank all their sponsors and help- ers for their support throughout the year. Berry rewarding lifestyle but hard work Little beauties: Buffy and Justin with the fruits of their labour at Blue River Orchard. Swapping the glitz and glamour of Wellywood for the backblocks of Northland may seem a tall order for some, but not for former film cam- eraman Justin Topzand and his partner Buffy. Originally hailing from Auckland before Wellington beckoned, the couple then moved to Northland where they bought land in Waipapa. We had always wanted to grow from the land and needed to make the move while the chil- dren were still in pri- mary school, Buffy says. That was nine years ago and the children, Jack and Reuben, are now in their teens and the spray-free blue- berries are thriving at Blue River Orchard. With no prior growing knowledge, they have had to learn as they go and now farm a hectare of early season berries which they send to Whangarei and Auck- land markets. Many think it s an idyllic life, but it s very hard, rewarding work, Justin says. Buffy also works as a therapist for Northland Health. When they started growing blueberries, the amazing benefits of the little fruit were only just becoming popular. These days, the fruit virtually sells itself. The couple chose blue- berries mainly for their known health properties. As well as blueberries, you can also take out blueberry icecream or a coffee from the orchard shop which will be open to the public from early December through to March, 10am to 5pm seven days a week. You can also catch Blue River Orchard at the Kerikeri Street Party, Waimate North Field Days and the Bay of Islands Ocean and Orchard Wine and Food Festival. There doesn t seem to be much spare time for the busy couple and when asked what they did in their spare time the reply came back in unison, what spare time? With two teenage sons into music and other interests their downtime is spoken for. Blue River Orchard is at 45 Koropewa Rd, Kerikeri, phone 09 407 7411.
