About 1am on Sunday, a 14-year- old male was fatally injured in Morewa while riding his bicycle with a friend. Enquiries are ongoing. No one else was injured. Tuesday evening a vehicle was unlawfully taken in Awanui, Kai- taia and involved in a crash about 10pm that evening. Five female occupants one aged 13, 14 and 20 and two aged 16 years all from Kaitaia were in the vehicle and were taken to Kaitaia Hospital. None were severely injured. The vehicle, a Nissan Sabrina station wagon, rolled several times during the crash. A 21-year-old male driver from Kawakawa appeared in court on October 11 after failing a breath test the previous Wednesday evening about 11pm. Police appre- hended the driver after he drove into a ditch in Hautapu where he blew 940ml per litre of breath. Bail was denied due to two pre- vious drink driving charges. Two bottles of spirits were allegedly stolen from Kerikeri Liquorland on Wednesday at about 4.45pm. Thursday afternoon, police ini- tiated a vehicle to stop in Waipapa, but the car sped away. Police pursued the vehicle and abandoned the chase several times because of high speeds. The vehicle was eventually stopped in Wainui Rd, Kaeo, with road spikes and the driver and three occupants fled the scene. Tracker dogs were used and the driver, a 16-year-old Kaeo youth, and occupants were apprehended. The driver was charged with driv- ing with excess alcohol, 172ml per litre of breath, failing to stop and breaching bail on previous drink charges. A second occupant aged 18 years was also arrested for breaching bail. TV's marae cook-off A new competitive cooking show coming soon to Maori Television will see marae teams from all over the country compete against each other. The new show blends some of the best challenge-based cooking shows into a fresh new format with a distinctly Maori flavour,'' associate producer and presenter Nevak Rogers says. Tumanako Productions, the production company making the new series, is now calling for applications from marae around the country. Eight successful marae teams will battle it out in the kitchen, showcasing their local delicacies alongside their culinary skills and could take away tens of thousands of dollars' worth of prizes. If the ringawera [chefs] from your marae are world-famous for serving up great kai, we want to hear from you,'' says Rogers. We're looking for ringawera guns from across the motu to go head-to-head in a series of chal- lenges that will test a range of skills from kai prep and fundrais- ing to cooking budget meals and creating signature dishes.'' Applications close November 1. Teams interested should email email@example.com.
