Work is under way on an exciting new develop- ment at the Honey House -- the cottage behind Kemp House, New Zealand's oldest building. The Honey House, built in 1978 as a curator's cottage, is enjoying a complete revamp by Watson Buil- ders as part of a new development that the Historic Places Trust says will boost numbers of visitors to the Kerikeri Basin. We're not in a pos- ition to give away too many details at this point, though we can reveal that we're work- ing on a new cafe which, when finished, will offer a lovely riverbank food experience,'' says the trust's northern heritage destinations manager Natalie McCondach. The new cafe will operate from the Honey House on what is believed to be the site where beehives were housed and honey pro- duced by missionary set- tlers James and Char- lotte Kemp in the 1840s. The cafe will also have outdoor seating. This, together with the hugely popular Stone Store shopping experi- ence offering classic Kiwiana products and authentic frontier trade goods, is part of ongoing initiatives that the NZHPT is carrying out to encourage visitors to stay and enjoy the Basin longer,'' says Natalie. Although not historic itself, the Honey House is in an ideal setting -- next to New Zealand's oldest buildings, not far from Kororipo Pa and overlooking the Kerikeri River where it tumbles into the tidal inlet. We are working with a local food producer on the cafe concept and we aim to be open for busi- ness in early November,'' says Natalie. We're confident that the cafe will become a favourite go to place for locals and visitors.'' Boxing on for charity All smiles: Bay of Islands Certified Builders Association president Bevin MacCarthy, left, and vice-president Mark Todd present Alison Shipton of Pink & Steel Pilates Trust with the spoils of their charity boxing event held at the Turner Centre in Kerikeri on September 22. It raised an impressive $8206. The funds presented to the trust on Friday will go towards providing treatment for patients in the Northland region recovering from cancer surgery.
