CONTINUED Page 11 The Waipapa Rotary Club s Annual Book Fair is an event that just keeps growing. The book fair was first run in 1998 and since then has outgrown its original venue three times, expanded from a half day fair to one and a half days and has become one of the biggest such events in North- land. At last year s fair it was estimated there were more than 25,000 books for sale at $2 each. To organise the fair takes almost military- style precision. Books are donated to Rotary throughout the year from across the community. Initially these go into a container with the real work starting three months before the fair. The books are moved to a bigger location, usu- ally an unoccupied fac- tory unit or packing shed found via generous sup- port of local landowners so this really is a com- munity affair. They are then sorted, with the fiction being packed up in boxes ready for transporting. More work is carried out separating the non- fiction books into basic headings before being boxed and stacked ready for the fair. Book titles cover just about every subject imaginable. The weekend of the fair brings a massive and highly organised oper- ation. It s all hands on deck with trailers, utes, vans and the enthusiastic help of the Kerikeri School Sailing Club moving the books from the sorting location to the fair venue within a few hours, to be set up on tables ready for the reading public. Once the fair opens the books fly out the door. Many use the fair to stock up on reading for the coming year, re- cycling books purchased in previous years. This year the fair is being held on Friday, November 2, from 4pm to 8pm, and Saturday, November 3, from 8am to 3pm at The Bay Sports Stadium, Harmony Lane, Waipapa. The Bay Sports facili- ties have expanded with much improved parking.
