Motoring Advertising Feature BMW leads way in sustainability The BMW Group has been named the world s most sustainable auto- motive company for the eighth consecutive year in the ranking just pub- lished by the SAM Group for the Dow Jones Sus- tainability Indexes. Sustainability is firm- ly embedded in the BMW Group s culture and cor- porate strategy. In 2001, the group committed itself to the United Nations Environ- ment Programme, the UN Global Compact and the Cleaner Production Declaration. It was also the first company in the automot- ive industry to appoint an environmental officer back in 1973. Today, the sustainabil- ity board is comprised of all members of the board of management. The BMW Group was also listed in the Global 500 Leadership Index published by the Carbon Disclosure Project, achieving its all-time best score. With 99 of 100 possible points, the BMW Group is not only sector leader but is also among the top three companies from all sectors worldwide. Boxer nears end of its touring days Cornered fighter: Much-loved BMW boxer continues to defy retirement. By PAUL OWEN BMW s air-cooled boxer twin-cylinder engine is on the ropes and fighting for its life as a long battle with Europe s increas- ingly stringent emission laws enters its final round. The R1200RT could mark the final bell for the Munich concern s famous air-cooled flat- twin tourer. Motorcycles will have to meet Euro 4 standards by 2014 and the step up from Euro 3 is quite a challenge requiring a 25 per cent reduction in toxic exhaust gas emis- sions. Will Euro 4 sound the death knell for the simple yet elegant air- cooled motorcycle en- gine? BMW obviously thinks so judging by all the spy shots that are now circulating of new liquid-cooled boxer twin- powered prototypes. The boxer only got away with sticking to traditional air-cooling for so long because of the delay in the ramping up of emission standards for motorcycles. The air-cooled boxer will leave the sales arena next year not as some fat piece of obsolete tack, but in the fittest shape that it has ever been, with an ability to deliver its strongest punch ever. AT A GLANCE: Engine: 1170cc air- cooled DOHC 8v boxer twin stoked by fuel injec- tion to develop 81kW (110bhp) at 7750rpm and 120Nm of torque at 6000rpm. Transmission: Six- speed sequential gear- box, shaft final drive. Frame: What frame? Engine used to connect alloy telelever and steel- tube rear monoshock sub-frames together, both of which feature sophisticated electronic suspension adjustment. Price: $39,909. Hot: Still a punchy and dynamic bike to ride despite the wealth of fit- ted equipment; last of the air-cooled boxer engines delivers charac- ter and punch in equal measures. Not: Just one equipment level on sale in New Zea- land.
