Shake off the winter blues with a spring beauty regime, perhaps starting at the top with your crowning glory -- hair. Winter can play havoc with the condition, leav- ing hair dull and lifeless. Now's the time to think about deep conditioning. To get that healthy shine use heat-activated shampoo, deep condition at least weekly and don't use too many styling products that can dull the hair by coating it. If your hair is extremely damaged, con- sider a repair session at the hair salon. As we shed our winter clothing and look for- ward to summer fashion, now might be the time for a new hairstyle. What suits one person does not necessarily suit another -- it all depends on the shape of your face so get some good advice. Our hair frames our face and the way it is cut and styled should high- light our best features. You might be thinking of changing the colour of your hair. You can use an at-home colouring kit. Try to stick pretty close to your natural hair col- our if it's your first time. This way it won't be the end of the world when roots start growing in. For those of us who are bolder and looking for a complete change to our hair colour, professional advice is definitely rec- ommended. When it comes to highlights, often less is more. To make your man- made streaks look natu- ral you should only go one or two shades lighter than your base colour. Having beautiful, healthy hair shouldn't cost a fortune -- remem- ber you are what you eat and diet is definitely reflected in your hair. Top talent at salon Kerikeri certainly seems to have talent when it comes to hair- dressing. Sharon Sanderson of Northland Hair Company is one such talent. Last year she was hand picked by Wella to participate in its world renowned Mas- ter Colour course. Seven graduates were selected from New Zealand to attend Wella studio training once a month for a year. The course covered all aspects of hair colouring, the science of hair colour, as well as psychology and behavioural approach- es with clients. I got to train with a guest artist from Aust- ralia for a day which was an amazing experience and also worked alongside some great hairdress- ers sharing ideas and techniques,'' says Sha- ron. Now Sharon is imparting her know- ledge to her team of stylists at Northland Hair Company. Two of her team, Meredith Simpson and Laurel Stratford, recently gained pla- cings in the New Zea- land Hairdressing Competition. Meredith, who has been with the salon for 10 years, is a regional finalist out of a record 333 entries in the Edi- torial Stylist of the Year, while Laurel is a top 10 finalist in the Patrick Cameron Hair-up section.
