At present it has about 220 members. The association intro- duces activities and initi- atives to put Kerikeri on the map and it takes every opportunity to pro- mote the district as a potential location to visit, live and invest in, as well as to improve and develop conditions for those residents and busi- nesses already here. Projects include the installation of a closed circuit TV system in the central business district, and developing stronger links with surrounding district associations to promote the wider Bay of Islands. The Kerikeri Jingle now being broadcast on radio was instigated by KKDBA and composed by The Radio Network giving the community profile. Annual membership gives access to all the benefits the network has to offer, and supports a volunteer committee to promote growth of busi- ness. The committee active- ly represents members both within and outside the community and liaises with and lobbies the Far North District Council and other bodies to highlight local com- mercial issues. It also organises and supports events such as The Half Marathon Street Party and the Ocean and Orchard Wine and Food Festival. It also donates to Lions to assist the Christmas parade, and other organisations. The association's ann- ual meeting will be held at 6pm on August 30 at Bay of Islands Golf Club, Fairway Drive. Prosperous future lies in the lap of the young YES you can: The variety of business opportunities that Northland students come up with is endless. The development of Northland's young people is critical to ensure that the region can look forward to a vibrant and prosperous future. Through programmes like the Lion Foundation Young Enterprise Scheme, the Northland Youth Development Trust is passionate about helping youth realise their potential. It thereby prepares them for their roles as happy, confident, pro- ductive members of a strong Northland com- munity. The Young Enterprise Scheme is an experien- tial learning programme offering students the opportunity to start up a business and run it for a year. Every year hundreds of companies are set up by senior secondary stu- dents throughout the country participating in YES. YES helps develop per- sonal strengths and teach about business and many participants have gone on to be successful entrepreneurs and busi- ness leaders. An important facet of this scheme is that col- laboration with the local community is facilitated by connecting YES com- panies with mentors from the local business community, helping YES companies to find suppli- ers/producers where required or needed -- even helping them to get technical and legal advice to protect their intellectual property in some cases. Anyone interested in getting involved with the ongoing growth and delivery of the trust's programmes are invited to the Northland Young Leaders Day on Sept- ember 14 at the Turner Centre, Kerikeri. They will also be hold- ing a YES Northland Trade Fair at the Turner Centre on September 1. To find out more or how you can help contact YES on 09 407 5409 or 027 281 9981.
