Art keeps Kevin on the go Artistic abilities: Ahipara artist Kevin Griffiths is displaying his work at this year's Royal Queensland Show at the RNA showgrounds in Brisbane until August 18. Artist Kevin Griffiths is less conventional than most. The Ahipara resident has been a quadriplegic since he was 13. He does all of his brush work using his mouth and a foot. Mr Griffith ended up in a wheelchair after a diving accident in 1978. His disability ended his plans to be a builder like his dad but didn't stop him trav- elling extensively overseas or pursuing his artist tal- ents. He started using acrylics in 1991 and has been a mem- ber of the Association of Mouth and Foot Painting Artists for 11 years. Mr Griffiths paints New Zealand landscapes and says his work has also taken him offshore. He returned from Singa- pore in April after a week- long workshop attended by a number of Kiwi mouth and foot painting artists. Mr Griffiths experimented with watercolours during the trip but his painting is pre- dominantly acrylic. He says it's easier to man- age and dries quickly. "If you make a little mis- take, it's easy to paint it out." Mr Griffiths is philosophi- cal about his situation and the accident that changed his life so dramatically. "You lose something, you gain something else," he says. "And it wasn't as hard as you may think. Give it a try. Throw your pen in your mouth and start writing. "I gained the ability to earn a living as a painter,'' he says. Who knows what I would have done if I'd been running around," he says. Mr Griffiths has lived in Ahipara since 1989 and calls it a "lovely spot". He hopes to put on a solo exhibition in the north some day. He has three paintings displayed at the annual Royal Queensland Show in Australia. His next challenge is to painting something a "wee bit bigger". College hub for special needs pupils A partnership of the Edu- cation Ministry, Kaitaia Col- lege and Blomfield Special School will bring a new spe- cial needs facility into oper- ation at Kaitaia College. In the transformed home economics block, a new spe- cial needs department -- Te Puna Aroha -- will be in the centre of the college, adjac- ent to the quad and with easy access via the Pukepoto Rd entrance. The plans and information were introduced last week at two hui presented by Sally Wilkinson and Margaret Coogan. Ms Wilkinson is principal of Blomfield Special School, in Whangarei, and of the other Blomfield satellites at Kaitaia Primary School, Morningside School and Manaia View School. Ms Coogan is special needs head teacher at Kai- taia College. The refurbishment will be ready for the new school year in 2013. Pre-enrolment forms are now available. Te Puna Aroha is seen as a positive step in breaking down barriers and the facility could be a hub for special needs activities and programmes in the com- munity.
