Volunteer firefighters had an open day in the pouring rain on Sunday to show the com- munity their new fire truck. And despite the rain, a few Okaihau families turned up for a ride in the fire truck and afternoon tea with the crew. Another open day closer to Christmas is a possibility when organisers say they hope for finer weather. Karen Mudgway says: It is very comfortable compared to our old appliance and has lots of storage space. We are all very pleased with it and sincerely thank the Fire Service.'' Damian Southorn says that the new 2012 Iveco Eurocargo cab and chassis was built in Italy. It comes with a full elec- tronic Euro 4 low emission engine. It has an electronic Allison automatic transmission for hassle-free gear-changing and airbag suspension for better handling. The 250 bhp provides a quicker acceleration and bet- ter hill-climbing ability than the previous vehicle, a 1987 Hino. Crews will drive with ABS braking and an electronic stability programme with better handling during emergency response driving. The body and pump were made and fitted in New Zea- land by Fraser Fire and Res- cue. The truck has a 2000 litre water tank and an 1800 litres-a-minute pump. The fire truck also has a class A foam system for improved fire knockdown and suppression. It has more compartment space than the previous vehicle, which enables it to carry a full range of fire and rescue equipment. And the new truck has up- to-date emergency lighting and communication systems. Rally of support saves toy library Toys: Hugh Donovan, 2, enjoys the toys available at the toy library, which reopens on August 4. The Kerikeri Community Toy Library celebrated its 21st birthday this year. And for the first time in its history it has been a relief for committee members. It has been a shaky few months for the toy library because for the first time, it struggled to stay open due to lack of committee members. Area mums rallied together and an all-new committee has now been elected. So thanks to their com- mitment the service the toy library provides to the public will continue. Parents and caregivers are able to join for a nom- inal fee and gain access to an array of toys. These include indoor and outdoor playthings, toddler pushbikes and cars, dress-ups and a growing collection of cake tins are also for hire. For parties, the library has a ride-on train for hire and it is continually updating toys to please all ages of youngsters. Located at the rear of the Proctor Library in Kerikeri, the community toy library has new open- ing hours: Tuesday and Saturday from 10am till 12.30pm and Thursday from 1.30pm till 4pm. New members and committee members are always welcome -- pop down at the library on Cobham Rd to sign up.
