Timid: Tex has bone calcification on his left leg. Bill Miles is searching for two dogs lost in Puketi Forest on Saturday. I've got one very upset son at the moment,'' he says. They went missing early on Saturday morning and have not been seen since. Bill was hunting in the Puketi Forest, off Puketi Rd in the Waihoanga Stream area. They seemed to be tracking for the Waipapa River area, so they could come out anywhere from the Fairy Pools area through to the Mokau Ridge area. Both dogs are extremely friendly and should come to anyone, both were wearing tracking collars and their bat- teries should be good for another couple of days.'' Tahi is a 10-month- old greyhound/collie x with a ginger brindle over white legs. She's still a pup and has a lot of energy. Tex is a three-year- old mastiff/boxer/ter- rier x, all white with a few brown/brindle spots. He's got a bone calcification on his left front leg and his hips are out of square. He's very timid. If you can help, call Bill on 021 952 406 or 09 40 -7796. Mayoral bike event attracts 100 riders Day out: Alex Horsman,15, heads into the home stretch. On board: Wayne Brown wants businesses to become more involved. By HAMISH MACLEAN Streams of cyclists, young and old, made the 13.5km Okaihau to Kai- kohe section of the 84km Pou Herenga Tai trail hum on Sunday. Participants in this year's Mayoral Cycle Ride said they had a good day out on this sec- tion of the Twin Coast Cycle Trail, although the number of riders dropped from last year's inaugural ride. About 100 riders made it out on Sunday. Last year was special because it was the open- ing,'' Far North District mayor Wayne Brown says. Today's sort of settled down as an annual day out.'' Mr Brown says that while he expects the event to move forward as a low key ride, there ought to be an effort to get the Okaihau and Kaikohe business com- munities more involved in next year's event. In the long term it's an investment for the district -- to bring tour- ism here -- and we want the businesses to start to learn how to extract business from that, in the way that those people in Otago have. It's in their interests to do that.'' He says that there's a different level of initiat- ive displayed in each of the 46 towns in the Far North District. These two -- Okaihau and Kaikohe -- need a bit more prodding than some of the other ones,'' Mr Brown says. Councillor Sally Macauley says the trail is absolutely beautiful'' and she says it has been busy since it opened -- that on some weekends she's seen up to 40 or 50 cars parked near the trailhead as cyclists flock to use that section of the trail. She says that promot- ing a healthy lifestyle is a natural byproduct of the trail. A healthy lifestyle, economic development -- introducing more busi- ness -- more employment, what do you see?'' Ms Macauley says. Less crime because everyone's employed. It's amazing how it all turns in one great circle,'' she says. Pou Herenga Tai -- Twin Coast Cycle Trail -- is a Government initiative that is geared to support tourism throughout New Zealand. Once completed the Far North section will extend west from Okaihau through Horeke--a$4 million investment.
