Okaihau Primary s parent teacher associ- ation, in association with the Okaihau Lions Club, is looking forward to hosting a horse racing carnival on Saturday, March 31 at 7pm, at Okaihau College. Funds raised will be going towards resources and sports equipment for the children attending the primary school. It will be a fun even- ing, $10 tickets include supper and $10,000 funny money . Jockeys race by competitors winding the wooden horses to the finish line. You can watch -- or race your horse -- then use your winnings to buy prizes. Tuned up to visit the north Resilient: Jock Hume, the Singing Cowboy, is still entertaining after 42 years. Singing Cowboy Jock Hume is back in town this week. He s available to enter- tain at kids parties, school events, retirement homes, galas, fairs and more. Jock has no intention of hanging up his guitar and travels the country presenting old country and western favourites in his inimitable style. Think Slim Dusty. And fun songs for kids too. When not busy with engagements, Jock takes to the streets as a busker to entertain passers-by and keep his donations stetson filled. He ll be in Paihia busking on Saturday. Book in family time at literacy day THANKS TO Scholastic New Zealand for providing 1500 quality children's books for $1500.That's more than $10,000 worth of sponsorship The Oxford Sports Trust has granted $1500 to pay for the books The Rotary Club of Kaikohe plans and co-ordinates the day Paper Plus Kaikohe has donated the bags and donated items for the prizes Kaikohe Bus Company is lending a bus for the day Te Hauora o Kaikohe and Office Max have donated items for the prizes. Reading rocks: Kaikohe Rotary's fun Literacy Day is on again at Northland College. The great Kaikohe Rotary Literacy Day is being held at Northland Col- lege on March 24 from 10am to mid- day. The emphasis is on participation and enjoyment. And there s around 1500 books being given away. What happens on the day? Each participating school or group sets up a stand with suitable literacy activi- ties for the children to complete This is an opportunity for whanau and caregivers to share some of the wonderful literacy activities the children enjoy at school. When children arrive they are given a Literacy Passport. Each time they complete an activity their passport is stamped. Once all the spaces on the pass- port are stamped the student goes to the bus where the passport is exchanged for a prize bag of books. It s fun and family involvement at its best. Join Paper Plus Kaikohe at the literacy day. Meet Clifford The Big Red Dog at the Paper Plus stand between 10.30am and 11am. Bring the kids and a camera. An ideal time to get a photograph of them with Clifford. There will also be a colouring-in competition to be handed in to the store by March 30 with prizes for the following age groups: 0-4 years, 5-8 years and 9-12 years.
