By DAVE MOORE Efforts to make load- carrying Jaguars have appeared now and then, but they ve been expens- ive, ugly and less than practical. The new XF Sportbrake puts an end to such things. Despite the presence of striking Bertone concept cars, Ferrari s brand- new two-seater front- engined GT car and important new models from Audi and Volvo, it was a station wagon that stopped the show at Geneva recently. Just as its E-type fore- bear aroused the crowds at the same venue almost exactly 51 years before, Jaguar s achingly pretty XF Sportbrake took the crowd s breath away at the famous Swiss motor show. Based on the recently- revamped XF sedan, the Sportbrake is the station wagon that Jaguar has been promising for some years. Actually this car is so lovely to look at, that calling it a wagon is like calling a classic black silk Versace shift a frock. Initially, the Sport- brake will use Jaguar s recently introduced 2.2-litre four cylinder turbodiesel engine along with its established 3.0-litre V6 turbodiesel, each driving the rear wheels through an eight- speed automatic gear- box. Talk of a petrol- powered Sportwagon is predicated on whether its maker decides to mar- ket this version of the XF in the United States, where only petrol Jaguars have thus far been available. To compete with the Germans using petrol V6 and V8 power, Jaguar would have to option all- wheel-drive for its new station wagon as BMW, Benz and Audi already do.When asked about that, Jaguar merely said they didn t comment on potential future pro- ducts. Which is Jag-speak for watch this space. Market keen for German-look Kia Kia K9: A dog with bite, Kia builds itself a 5-series. By DAVE MOORE To be powered by V6 and V8 engines shared with partners Hyundai, Kia s K9 looks suspic- iously similar to one of Europe s finest per- formance executive sedans. The slick-looking K9, which will appear on the Korean market first, looks as German as it can. Which is hardly sur- prising, considering the Korean concern s chief designer is German Peter Schreyer, a for- mer Audi man. The Korean market launch is set for the first half of this year and overseas launch timing will be revealed later. The K9 is Kia s first rear-wheel drive sedan, and it has been one of 2012 s most eagerly anticipated new cars. Motorbike that runs like a car In a spin: Gyroscopic car-bike. This electric motorcycle has a cabin and most of the accoutrements of a car and uses a twin stabiliser system to keep it upright. Called the C-1 and made by Lit motors, the machine features air conditioning, seatbelts and multiple airbags to protect its two occu- pants. It won t come cheap with proposed pricing being about $30,000, though this may drop as numbers increase. As long as the C-1 s gyros spin, the two- wheeler will remain upright without help.
