Mixed media hits the mark ABOUT THE ARTS WITH MIKE NETTMANN Hoki: Mahina Kaui with 3 waves of the Hokianga. Why do people think artists are special? It's just another job. -- Andy Warhol Hokianga Art Gal- lery Rawene Te Taiao O Hokianga -- The Environs of The Hokianga features local artists and tutors from NorthTec Rawene. Whenever I visit this gallery I am always in awe of the ingenuity and creativity of Hokianga artists who work in mixed media with Lindsay Antrobus Evans at the helm. Lindsay's piece Treaty Fetish, using copper nails from the Horeke Mangungu Mission Home with a Kohukohu wharf beam, gauze and distemper -- simply superb. Look out for works incorporating paua, nylon chord, watercolour inks, ster- ling silver, totara, copper wire, and automotive oil paint pigment. Exhibition ends Febru- ary 19. Rachel Miller Village Arts In all the years I have known Rachel Miller and her work I never cease to be amazed at her excel- lence and masterful craftsmanship. Rachel has the innate, enviable passion of a true artist who is immensely serious about her work and process. In this exhibition she presents four sections of new works: Small Prayers For Now extends her exploration into abstract painting which we had a glimpse of in her exhibition at Kaan Zamaan last year; From One Island To Another demonstrates her superb drawing skills and brilliant intellect; Part of the Whole reveals her exciting foray into the world of monoprints; Netherworld Dances in- corporates mixed media with interesting patterns created by pressing white paint on to a black background. Exhibition ends March 1 -- do not miss it. Mirror Images at Russell Museum As part of the warm- up to Waitangi Day, Rus- sell Museum presented 20 cartoons'' by inter- national artist Helme Heine where he holds a mirror up to both Pakeha and Maori hoping that each will recognise not only their own sweet self but also their essential counterpart''. I do believe Mr Heine should stick to his children's book writing and illustrating. It appears his cartoons come from the mind of someone who really does not get the complexities of Maori/Pakeha relat- ions because it is most definitely not black and white'' and as cut and dried as his work suggests. Like Clockwork at Turner Centre The first of hopefully a series of art exhibitions at this venue presented by Arts Agency Aotearoa. The show included works by three young Kerikeri artists Danielle Terrizzi, Bridie MacInnes, Chan- elle Lindsay who aspire to become professional artists. Judging from their works we need to keep an eye out for them in the future. Snippets Last Friday evening Kerikeri Jazz Club commenced the year at Bishops Wood with a great audience and magi- cal moments of sublime jazz provided by Bryn van Vliet with Thelon- ious Punk. For information and if you would like to per- form at one of these evenings email Reese Helmondollar at firstname.lastname@example.org. Chris Wilkie's Unset- tled Settlers is on at Kaan Zamaan Kerikeri and Art at Wharepuke Kerikeri is hosting Print Arts Northwest, Port- land, Oregon, US -- a special portfolio presen- tation.
