A 13.5km Kaikohe to Okaihau section of the 84km trail was opened to public use last year. Construction of a further 20km of the trail between Kaikohe and Kawakawa is expected to be completed by June. This includes two 6km sections between Kawa- kawa and Otiria and between the old Kaikohe Railway Station and the Kaikohe Airport which are already open to pub- lic use. Current indications are the whole Kaikohe to Kawakawa section will be fully constructed towards the middle of this year, Far North District Council infra- structure and as- set manager David Penny says. Christmas lunch goes down well Festive spirit: Santa -- volunteer Alexis Baker -- brings Christmas cheer to Nancy Bristow and Boatie Kiwikiwi. Once again the Kai- kohe Christmas Day lunch was a huge suc- cess. Many people and their caregivers enjoyed a festive meal thanks to the generous support of local volunteers and business sponsorship. For a full list of sponsors, see the classified pages in this issue. Field days here again Anybody heading to the Northland Field Days in Dargaville on March 1-3 will have more to do and see this year. Organisers have put together a wide and varied programme with all the events of previous years plus new events and attractions to ensure there is something for all ages. Some of the more exciting events include lawn mower races, a tractor pull, chainsaw carving, quad skills, the junior tractor pull, sheepdog trials, and fire and police service demonstrations. With a prize pool of more than $2000 Northland Field Days president Lew Duggan says the tractor pull should prove to be a big drawcard for many. That kind of money attracts serious compe- tition and the Northland Field Days has always attracted some of the top tractor drivers from all around the country, Mr Duggan says. He says this was only the tip of the iceberg with equestrian events, a creche and helicopter rides also available. There will be some- thing for you at the 2012 Northland Field Days, he says. Anybody interested on what events are avail- able can go on the North- land Field Days website: http://www.northland fielddays.co.nz.
