Remember their needs and keep them happy. VACCINATION 5in1 Summer is here, so let's enjoy it but don't forget the livestock on your lifestyle property. The problems that can occur through summer include fly strike, worm infection (especially Hae- monchus -- barber's pole), facial eczema, fleas and ticks. Fly strike in sheep is best controlled by shear- ing and the application of a suitable fly control product such as Zapp Encore. Worm control is im- portant, as warm wet weather is ideal for barbers pole infection. Barbers pole worms actively suck blood from the stomachs of sheep, goats and alpacas so watch out for this pest because you can very quickly end up with anaemic animals. At Bay of Islands Vets we have several drenches which have good activity for the con- trol of barbers pole so discuss all your requirements with us. Facial eczema is a summer disease when warm wet weather results in fungal spores developing in the base of grass. Sheep, cattle and especially alpacas are the most susceptible. We do free spore counts at our Waipapa and Kaikohe clinics. Facial eczema is best controlled by zinc drenching, either orally daily or as a capsule which gives four to six weeks' protection. Fleas and ticks love warm moist weather. Good flea control on your cats and dogs can be achieved by regular treatments with prod- ucts such as Frontline. Ticks can affect sheep, cattle, horses and al- pacas. Come and talk to us to get the best control prod- uct for your situation. Don't forget the booster vaccination for your lambs and calves. To get full protection from clostridial diseases which can quickly kill your well grown pet calf or lamb, you need to ensure you have given them two shotsof5in1to ensure good protection. At Bay of Islands Vets we can dispense you doses to ensure good protection.
