More than 800 horses were entered in the Taupo Xmas Classic Pony Grand Prix. The four-day event was held at the Taupo Equestrian Cen- tre.In atrocious wet weather 39 riders started in the 3* Pony Grand Prix 1.35m class. Five riders went through to the jump-off. Tegan Newman on her pony Watch me Move was the winner in this class and they were the only combination to go clear. This follows their recent successes with a win in the Northland 2* Pony Grand Prix class and third placing at the Auckland 2* showjumping event. Entries open for Waitangi Bowl ki-o-rahi tourney Entries are beginning to roll in for the pres- tigious Waitangi Bowl Ki-o-rahi Challenge at Waitangi on February 4. The fast-paced tra- ditional Maori contact sport will feature in the 2012 Waitangi Festival which leads up to the annual commemorations on the Waitangi Treaty Grounds on February 6. The unique sport features a round, woven flax ball and is played on a circular field by teams of eight, traditionally compris- ing four females (wahine) and four males (tane). The catch-and-pass game bears a close resemblance to rugby as played today. Ki-o-rahi is believed to predate rugby in New Zealand and is undergoing a major resurgence across the country. It first attracted international interest through the 28th Maori Battalion which introduced the sport to Europe during World War Two. The sport is still played in parts of France, Italy and the United States. Now in its third year of competition, the Waitangi Bowl Challenge is being organised by the Ngati Hine Health Trust in conjunction with the Waitangi National Trust. Pool play will start at 10 am with the finals expected to begin at 2.45 pm. Registrations close January 23. Inquiries to Rick McCall on 022-037-9077.
