Schools start racing waka Canoe racing: Northland secondary schools compete a waka ama regatta on Lake Ngatu. There's a new event on the Northland secondary schools sports calendar. School sports co-ord- inators have been push- ing to get a waka ama (outrigger canoe) event. Atrialyear7to10 regatta was held at Lake Ngatu on November 23. Students from five schools north of Kerikeri took part, racing in combined years 7 and 8 and years 9 and 10 grades. Sixteen teams took part, using W6 waka, borrowed from local clubs. They raced over a distance of 250m and 500m in fine weather. Maori protocol/tikanga was followed as closely as possible with a po- whiri and karakia to start the day. The regatta was a huge success and will be held again in November 2012. A similar event for senior school students is planned for March.
