Write to The Editor, Mail: 60 Broadway, Kaikohe; Email: northern.editor@ snl.co.nz Playcentre visit Itwaswithalotof pleasure and delight that our local Rawene playcentre, both parents and children, made a spontaneous visit to our community and longstay clients daycentre at Rawene Hospital earlier this month. Children armed with delicious gingerbread biscuits passed the goodies around to our elderly folk together with some snazzy Christmas decorations made by the kids. A banner made collectively by staff and children will adorn our piano over the Christmas period and a big hit with everybody was a very authentic looking gingerbread house, complete with white icing depicting snow and topped off with yummy lollies, all handmade by the parents and staff. Merry Christmas Rawene Playcentre and a big thank you to everyone who made this special day possible for our elderly longstay and community clients. Rawene Hospital staff Great shop Congratulations Paper Plus your new Kaikohe store looks fantastic. Great layout, great selection, a happy and friendly team to greet you with great service. You really have given the entrance to town a lift. At its opening last Saturday I happened to be one of the lucky shoppers who received a scenic helicopter ride, along with the others I travelled with all I can stay is wow and thank you. Well done Rob, Amanda the team at Paper Plus, and much appreciation to Ngapuhi Runanga for investing in Kaikohe's future. If you haven't been yet, check it out. I'm sure you'll be impressed. Kelly van Gaalen Kaikohe St John names its heroes Honoured: Peter Macauley of Kaikohe has been made a Commander of the Order of St John. St John celebrated Inter- national Volunteers Day on Monday by announc- ing its annual honours awards list -- alongside issuing a big thank you to 8300 St John volunteers. Northlanders who received awards: From Kaikohe, Peter Macauley was made a Commander of the Order of St John. From Kerikeri, Pat Cook, Peggy Goddard and Nick Scott were made Members of the Order of St John. From Whangarei, Phil Davis-Goff and Linda Donaldson are made Members of the Order of St John. Lynnette Pooley of Doubtless Bay and Eric Shackleton of Kaitaia were made Members of the Order of St John. The 2011 honours will be presented by Governor-General Sir Jerry Mateparae, who is the head of St John in New Zealand, at investiture ceremon- ies next year. Our volunteers make an incredible contribution to their communities every day,'' northern region manager Gary Salmon says. Working along- side our paid staff, they contribute to saving lives and improving the health and well-being of a large number of New Zealanders. It's their dedication day-in, day-out, year-in, year-out, that makes them real heroes to so many New Zealand- ers.'' In its citation making him a Commander, St John says Mr Macauley not only runs a very suc- cessful law firm, but also commits much of his time to community groups in Kaikohe, including St John's local area com- mittee. He has been a member since 1985, becoming chairman in 1987. Mr Macauley regularly serves St John above and beyond the call of duty. He was elected to the Northern Region Trust Board in 2004 and provides leadership as district chairman of Northland area com- mittees. He is also a member of Priory Chap- ter.Mr Macauley takes a keen interest in St John Youth division and attends its special occa- sions whenever possible. Sabin says thanks for your support Northland's MP elect Mike Sabin has just returned to Northland having spent three days at Parliament as part of the induction process. It was a very special time arriving at Parlia- ment and attending my first caucus meeting,'' Mr Sabin says. I have been in the chamber before but this time was poig- nant in the sense that I know I have earned the right to be there as a rep- resentative of Northland and that is a very special right and privilege. I am very grateful to all who have helped me get to this point and to Northlanders who have put their faith in me to work on their behalf in this capacity. I am humbled by the support and I want to express my thanks to all Northlanders for giving me this opportunity.'' Mr Sabin says he is working quickly to organise staff and re- organise the electorate office that will remain in Kerikeri, as well as ensuring systems are in place to start getting on with the job at hand.
