From the moment they launched the car about five years ago Volk- swagen had its roof and seating relationship right. When driving al fresco you sit low enough to be unworried by minor rain squalls while still high enough to know you re in an open car, taking in the sounds and frag- rances of a warm motoring day. Which was the theme into which Volkswagen placed its new Eos. It used a New Zealand based worldwide adver- tising campaign set around huge roadside flowers, giant thrushes and blackbirds that thrust into view as the car drove past, each element offering up its own smell and sound -- the domain of convert- ible drivers. You can see the old clip on You Tube: Eos rediscover your senses. The previous Eos V6 option has been dropped from the New Zealand range leaving us with the Golf GTi s 155kW TSi turbocharged four, which is no hardship. For all that the Eos is not a hot hatch thanks to extra weight born of the need to stiffen and reinforce an open-topped car like this. Sur- prisingly, at 7.8 seconds, it s only a second slower to 100kmh than the GTi. The seats are just right with lots of side- support and the familiar VW dash and driving environment is com- forting and reassuring. It has room for friends in the rear and provides sufficient volume for soft bags for a weekend away. Price: Volkswagen Eos TSi 2.0L with DSG $59,500. Fiat skids on US expansion plan Fiat 500: Jlo focus alienates males. The Fiat/Chrysler alliance hoped to sell 50,000 cars in the first year when the Fiat 500 was announced for US sales, but so far Fiat has delivered 15,826 examples. There have been delays in open- ing new outlets, up until August, Fiat had opened 100 dealerships in the States, including about 30 in July. The company s goal is to have 130 by the end of 2011. Fiat s marketing efforts in the US could be a problem too. Featuring Jennifer Lopez they focused on the singer and have failed to create a connection between the two while alienating male buyers. Jaguar's new arrival Baby Jaguar to be born: Asian Jaguars. According to UK Auto- car, Auto Express and other European sources, Jaguar is working on an all new front-drive small car which will be built and sold in India and China. It will be mar- keted around the world as a competitor for the BMW 1-series, Audi A1 and Benz A-class. Indian sources say the new model will use Tata s new three and four-cylinder turbodiesel and turbopetrol engines ranging from 1.4 to 2-litres, with eight and nine-speed automatic transmissions. Priced from about $45,000, models are expected to include a sedan, coupe and a road- ster. Little car big on winning Eco-rally: The T.27 city car. Gordon Murray s T.27 city car captured over- all honours at the Future Car Challenge eco-rally by travelling from Brighton to London using energy equivalent to 0.81L of petrol per 100km.
