Northland riders shine in Rotorua Storming the BOP: Megan Finlayson and her winning mount Greensleeves. At the Bay of Plenty horse trials in Rotorua on November 5 and 6, Northland horse riders took a whole bag of prizes, snatching them away from the locals. Megan Finlayson from Waimate North, not only won the training class B on her mount Green- sleeves leading from start to finish, but almost secured two other wins. She led after show jumping and dressage on her young horse Fair Call and jumped clear cross-country, but was slightly slow with 9.6 time penalties meaning she dropped into sixth place but still finished in the ribbons. Her third mount Cheleken Arwen also put in a very strong perform- ance finishing fourth in the Open Novice div- ision. Young rider Madeline Banks showed lots of potential, finishing a very well-placed sixth in the Novice B on Caven- dish, against much older riders. Juliet Wood and Den- ise Lincoln also gained placings and with cham- pionship events looming just a round the corner, Northland riders are looking to be strong con- tenders. Clean to sail programme Sailing for all: Bay of Islands Yacht Club sailing programme. Summer is on and so is sailing at the Bay of Islands Yacht Club. The club boasts an extensive learn to sail programme with various classes available for both children and youth beginners, and other classes for adult beginners through to seminars of racing rules for the racers. Sunday is the main day to meet with club members from 11am at the BOI Yacht Club, Waitangi. Programme: Sunday morning – learn to sail/ develop sailing, optimist dinghies and other centreboard classes. Sunday afternoon – windward leeward courses all classes wel- come. Wednesday night – adult learn to sail/har- bour courses all classes. Family fun at street party The Kerikeri Half Mara- thon on Saturday will end with the popular Kerikeri Street Party. Now in its third year, the party is becoming a must-do event. Gastronomic delights will be provided by over 30 Northland food and beverage stalls. Restaurants, bars and shops will be open and live music from three bands and a magician for the kids will add to the carnival atmosphere. The main street will be closed to traffic and transformed into a fiesta of music and fun for all the family from 5pm to 9pm. For those travelling from Paihia, buses will depart at 4.45pm from the Maritime Building, returning from Kerikeri at9pm,atacostof$10 return. Rangi Pairs men take to the green Rangi Pairs men’s bowls: Tournament winners Merv Kennedy and Alan Martin. The Okaihau bowls club’s 57th Rangi Pairs men-only tour- nament was held on November 5. Rangi is shortened from Rangiahua. This was a small settle- ment at the eastern end of the Hokianga Harbour where the bridge crosses the Waihou river, just past the turn off to Horeke on State High- way 1. Rangiahua had a hotel and general store. The trophy for the Rangi pairs bowls was donated by the hotel owners, Mr and Mrs W A Land. The hotel burnt down in 1963 and was not rebuilt. Full results can be found under Scores and Draws on page 22. Kaeo’s unbeaten season Kaeo played against KeriKeri Blue in the Under-11 final win- ning 29-0. The team had a suc- cessful season winning all 14 games and scored a total 859 points while conceding only 41 points.
