Kaikohe West School • Responsibility • Community • Respect • Success • Thinking • Literacy • Numeracy EMPOWERING SUCCESSFUL LEARNERS TOGETHER School steps up to 21st century Proud principal: Principal Hamish Ruawai was all smiles on opening day. Stage one complete: The new artificial turf outside the performing arts centre which opened on July 14. Over the next three years big changes will be taking place at Kaikohe West School. The school has a clear vision to provide a state of the art learning environment for 21st century learners, princi- pal Hamish Huriwai says. Stage one of this plan has already been com- pleted with the opening of the new performing arts centre in July. It is a modern venue for dance, drama and music. A feature of the com- plex is the $200,000 can- opy that provides much needed shelter from the sun and rain. The area under the canopy has a new arti- ficial turf and boasts two full netball courts, with one fully covered. Stage two will be a new administration block which will take shape in the New Year. A feature of this devel- opment will be the use of interior and exterior walls made of glass with the inclusion of a mass- ive kauri tree standing in the foyer. Stage three is exciting for learners, as a rad- ically new design of classrooms that will sup- port the latest tech- nology. Laptops, interactive whiteboards and sound rooms will take the place of traditional classrooms. All our students were born in the 21st century and it is Kaikohe West s aim to create a learning environment that matches their needs to prepare them for the ever-changing world in which we live, Mr Huriwai says.
