Israel policy In response to Chris Morey's letter, Propaganda (Northern News, November 9). The writer of the negative assessment of my play, Another Stupid Wall, is a member of KBRM, or Kiwis for Balanced Reporting on the Middle East. A quick glance at their website reveals their agenda -- to attack any criticism of Israel or Israeli government policy. A second member of their group has already harassed me, my school, and Playmarket with their pro- Zionist bullying. The very fact that they are attacking a comedic, light- hearted play whose message is one of peaceful co- existence, the power of love and the righting of wrongs, signals to me that they are not so much interested in peace or art as much as defending their own ideologies. Mr Morey's assertions that my play promotes negative stereotypes and that my thesis is that Jews have no right to be in Israel, is an indication that he has not read the entire play and that what he has read, he has not read closely. The problem here is not that they disagree with the politics of the play or that they simply dislike the play; rather, it is that they are attempting to discredit the play and even stop it from being performed. That much a member of their group actually wrote to me. IwasraisedasaJew,I went to Jewish school in the US, I also studied and lived in Israel, and half of my family still lives there. But I long ago realised that if it's peace we want, then the first step is acknowledging the past. Any resident of New Zealand should be aware of how crucial that step is. When Mr Morey speaks of our rangatahi'' he is ignoring the principles of the Treaty of Waitangi which make New Zealand an example Israel should learn from. But the members of KBRM, much like the government of Israel, are unable to take that first step. Joey Moncarz Taipa School Complicated With reference to the letter criticising the school play Another Stupid Wall, I would like to suggest that the letter writer view the play in Kerikeri later this month. Then he will discover that it is more comedic than a reading would suggest. He will also see that it is the Jewish father who realises, and indeed suggests, that the land must be shared. Co-existence is the happy outcome. Since there are two Jewish teachers at Taipa, the students are well aware that an Arab-Israeli peace is a complicated issue with no simplistic answers. Irene Turner Crombie Warm and witty The letter under the headline Propaganda (November 9) claims that the play Another Stupid Wall is wholly one- sided'' pro-Palestinian and anti-Israeli propaganda and that Israelis are presented as stupid, spiteful, prejudiced, arrogant and brutish''. It seems to be about a different play from the one that I attended recently at Taipa Area School. In this witty and warm- hearted comedy of personalities and ideas the action takes place in the home and bakery of a Jewish family who are a bundle of fun: Three quick-witted feisty teenage girls and their good- natured father. The lead characters are two teenage Palestinian terrorists'', who are also spirited and engaging. Under the guise of Kiwis they accept the hospitality of the Jewish family. They plan to burn the bakery down but quickly become caught up in relationships with their hosts, who include an entertainingly manic Israeli soldier. Love, bread-making and various shenanigans ensue. The prejudices and fixed positions that each side holds about the other gradually break down as romance and awareness of common humanity come into play. Far from being propaganda this optimistic and frequently hilarious play makes a plea for understanding, reconciliation and non- violence. Sure, it argues against the Israeli wall through the Palestinian West Bank (and that is a view worthy of consideration), but it also celebrates the idealism of young people and demonstrates their ability to take apart barriers that divide people. It is not surprising that this crisp and entertaining script, written by Joey Moncarz, a teacher at Taipa Area School, won Playmarket's 2011 Plays for the Young Award. Gerry Webb Peria Mural to go on show at art expo An art and craft expo is being staged in Kaikohe on Saturday, through the side entrance to the back area of Greenworld Health Fare shop -- the old Bedsplus shop. It runs from 11.30am to 5pm. Music, wood and stone carvers, flax and kite, korowai, painting, much more. There's free entry, and awesome meals and coffees available from Cafe Malaahi. Before the expo gets under way, there'll be a ceremonial unveiling of a community mural just down by the Shed liquor store across from the library at 10.30am. All welcome.
