It s time to don your running gear with Northland s biggest half marathon event just around the corner. On November 19 more than 2000 participants will take part in the Fullers Great- Sights Kerikeri Half Mara- thon, which doubles as the Athletics Northland half marathon championships. The 21.1km course will start on Waiare Rd, Okaihau, and finish at the Kerikeri Domain. This year s event will include clydesdale and filly categories, allowing athletes to choose to compete in weight categories. Heavier runners have a disadvantage over their smaller counterparts in long distance running, so allowing these athletes to run in weight as opposed to age categories enables their true abilities to be recognised. The event includes official timing and the distance is IAAF and AIMS certified with drink stations scattered along the course. Entries close on November 11. Go to www.runwalk series.co.nz to enter. After the half marathon the popular Kerikeri street party is on from 5pm to 9pm with the main street closed to traffic. Buses to the street party will depart the Maritime Building, Paihia, at 4.45pm and return from Kerikeri at 9pm, $10 return. To book a seat phone (09) 402-7421 or book at the Fullers Great- Sights Office, Maritime Building, Paihia. Kura are top touch team Winners: Te Kura Kaupapa Maori o Kaikohe has won the Northland Year 7 and 8 Touch Tournament. The weather was perfect for the Northland Year 7 and 8 Touch Tournament held in Kaikohe on November 3. Seven teams from five schools took part. Okaihau and Kura Kai- kohe were the stand-out teams throughout pool play, with Dargaville Intermediate also looking impressive. The semifinals saw Okaihau meet Tauraroa, and Kura Kaikohe face off with Dargaville. The Okaihau team showed too much class with a good win, and Kura Kaikohe came out on top of a close match with Dargaville. In the final it was score for score in the first half resulting in 3-all at halftime. The second half was just as hard but Kura Kaikohe held out4to3totakeitsfirst championship in this tourna- ment. Okaihau received the runner-up trophy for the sec- ond year in a row. The placings for 2011 were: Champions -- Kura Kaikohe; runners up -- Okaihau; third equal Dargaville 1, Tauraroa 2; fifth Panguru; sixth equal Dargaville 2, Tauraroa 1.
