ABOUT THE ARTS with Mike Nettmann ' Have no fear of perfection, you'll never reach it. ' -- Salvador Dali Richard Adams and Nigel Gavin in Kerikeri Last week we were lucky to experience a truly unique event in the Far North. Inter- nationally acclaimed NZ artist Richard Adams opened a new exhibition of recent work at Kaan Zamaan Kerikeri and then performed in con- cert on violin, accompanied by equally acclaimed guitarist Nigel Gavin at Marsden Estate Winery. Richard is cer- tainly master of his two passions, music and art, creating exquisite sen- sory titillations in both disciplines. Richard s abstract works reflect his improvisational skills as a jazz musician, emotion- ally charged with an overwhelming sense of joy. Richard and Nigel s performance at Marsden Estate was a demon- stration in the musical balance of brain and heart infused with a passion for playing good music with soul. Thanks to organisers Julia Rein- holt of Kaan Zamaan and Joan Honeyfield of Art Upstairs for a won- derful experience. So good to see two local galleries working together. Both galleries are now open until 7pm every Thursday. ABBA at Turner Centre All ABBA fans, of which I unashamedly admit am one, were not disappointed. This inter- national group of young performers captured the true ABBA spirit in their music with great arrangements, memor- able melodies and superb tight, harmonies. All the hits were there enticing the audience to get up and groove with hands in the air. Good to see some young people in the audi- ence dressed ABBA-style and enjoying the happy music. I left the theatre feeling good! Prize Winners at Art at Wharepuke Danielle Creenaune from Australia and Car- sten Borck from Germany are the joint winners of the first Art at Wharepuke Inter- national Open Printmak- ing competition that was held in 2009/10 attracting entries from the United States, Aust- ralia, New Zealand and Europe. This exhibition is the result of collabor- ation between the two artists. They chose a single day where each worked in a different European natural land- scape. Their drawings became the basis for each of five etchings. This series of prints explores landscapes through distance, origin and place with synchronicity binding the artist s perceptions. Although I find the con- cept behind the works intriguing the final result is somewhat lack- lustre and ho hum -- certainly not to be expected from two winners! Exhibition ends November 15. Origin Art & Craft Sonja Davy with her contemporary seascape paintings will be the final spotlight artist fea- tured at Origin Kerikeri. During this month, members and com- mission members are having a farewell sale with discounts ranging from 10 to 50 percent. Do go along to say goodbye, take advantage of the great prices, do a bit of Christmas shopping, or treat yourself to a beau- tiful piece of handmade art or craft. Origin members would like to take this opportunity to thank you for your cus- tom for the last 30 years. Chanelle Lindsay of Kerikeri High School Pupils show their artwork Schools in the Far North certainly nurture the artistic talents of their students and the com- munity has recently enjoyed the opportunity to admire and purchase the next generation s McCahon or Kahukiwa. In the past two weeks, Kerikeri High School and Okaihau College held their end of year exhibitions and both drew crowds of admirers. The secret to their suc- cess perhaps lies in the talent of the art teachers. Heads of art Russell Giles of Kerikeri and Barry Birchall of Okaihau attended Elam together and are clearly an inspiration to their students. Mr Birchall is ending his 27 year-long career in December to pursue his own artistic endeavours. I m looking forward to getting back into my own painting.
