Gardening by design: Flaxes create texture and tonal variation at Lyn and Maurice Shearman's garden. Water wonder: A beautiful water feature in Rotarian Vicki Douglas' garden. Scarecrows lined the streets of Kerikeri once again in preparation for the 24th Annual Kerikeri New World Rotary Garden Safari. We had 53 businesses participate this year which was a great accomplishment,'' says organiser Vicki Douglas whose garden hosted the entertainment and refreshments in the weekend. This year a new selec- tor chose gardens that had not featured in the 23 years the safari has been running. We're please to be able to present some- thing new to the visitors,'' Ms Douglas says. Judy and Bruce Burling's garden cer- tainly had something new to offer. Situated on a lava flow, there were impress- ive rock formations including a crater in the middle of the bush walk. Judy was on hand to offer thirsty guests a welcome cool drink on the balcony that sported an impressive view of the inlet. For those who aspire to perfection, Margaret and Harry Wynnychuk's garden provided plenty of inspiration for a per- fectly manicured land- scape as did Lyn and Maurice's orderly gar- den. It was worthwhile stopping in at Roland's Wood along the way to admire the exciting new plantings. This picturesque Eng- lish woodland has been lovingly restored by the Rotary Club of Kerikeri and has become a favour- ite retreat for tree and flower lovers as well as their canine companions. To support the wood, become a volunteer or make a donation, call Rotarians John Graham on 407-9510 or John Horrell 407-8239.
