Five of Ford's most mem- orable vehicles to feature on film and television were brought together in London recently to cel- ebrate 100 years of Ford of Britain. The Ford Anglia 105E from Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, lined up alongside the pink FAB1 from Thunderbirds, James Bond's Ford Mondeo from the 2007 film Casino Royale, a Ford Granada as seen in The Sweeney TV series and Dr Who's yellow Edward- ian vintage car. One of the most watched vehicles in film history is the turquoise Ford Anglia 105E. I'd been involved with Ford Anglia clubs for 30 years when I was asked by the filmmakers to pro- vide a car for the movie,'' owner John Colyer says. After that it just took off and I ended up sup- plying around 15.'' One of the most eye- catching vehicles at Elstree was the six- wheel Ford-badged FAB1 from the 2004 live- action film Thunder- birds. FAB1 is road legal and fully operational. For Daniel Craig's debut as James Bond in Casino Royale, he took to the wheel of a hand-built prototype. On the small screen, Ford vehicles featured in many series including two popular British programmes, gritty police drama The Sweeney and science- fiction drama Dr Who. The familiar car chases of The Sweeney helped the Ford Consul GT and the Ford Granada achieve cult status with car fans. The canary yellow vin- tage car with its WHO 1 number plate makes reg- ular appearances at Dr Who conventions and several fans have used the car for weddings. New offering from McLaren McLaren: New supercar being developed. By DAVE MOORE There isn't a dealer in New Zealand, you'll have to apply to Sydney if your want one, but McLaren's famous name is about to expand to a second production car to accompany the MP4- 12C, which has been on the market for less than a year. This is a necessary move from McLaren be- cause it has been felt by industry pundits that a single model cannot gain the turnover needed to establish the marque as a serious maker of sports cars, rather than a racing team that makes the odd road car. British publication Autocar even has it that the 21st century F1 will be revealed next year so that it accords with the 20th anniversary of the original. It is anticipated that much of the chassis development for the new supercar is already in train using the carbon fibre chassis tub of the MP4-12C, though its actual dimensions and specification have not been revealed. The new car is expected to employ a modular twelve-cyl- inder derivative of the V8, created for the MP4- 12C. With Ferrari offer- ing at least five platforms, and Lambor- ghini looking at having four of its own by the end of next year, it is unlikely that McLaren will stop at just two models. Self-drive: The car will take you where you want to go. Cars that drive EN-V concept car will partially drive itself, and General Motors says autonomous technology will be on the road by 2020. Cars that can partially drive themselves will be on the market in the form of a production second-generation ver- sion of GM's EN-V con- cept, which will be able to utilise cameras, sensors, radar and GPS to help it take over driv- ing duties from the per- son behind the wheel.
