9 NORTHERN NEWS, OCTOBER 5, 2011 NEWS Blossoming together Proud: Poppy Fuller won awards at last year's Bromeliad Society of New Zealand Fiesta: A combined orchid and bromeliad show is being put on at The Turner Centre in Kerikeri on October 14 and 15.This is the second time the two clubs have joined together for an annual show. The Bay of Islands Orchid Society was formed in 1983 and currently has a member- ship of 38 hobby growers with six being nationally accredited judges, and many holding awarded and inter- nationally registered plants. The club was recognised at the 1990 World Orchid Show in Auckland with the third place exhibit against national large clubs and international competition. This was the only time New Zealand won an award at the world show. At the last national show of orchids, several members received awards for placings and the club placed third. The Far North Bromeliad Group was formed in 2002 and currently holds a mem- bership of more than 90. In the last bromeliad national show, held in Auck- land in February, Poppy Fuller of Kerikeri won prizes in 14 of 28 classes entered, including seven firsts and scored points for an individ- ual exhibitor. As well as the quality orchids and bromeliads on show, there will be all types of plants for sale, plant and grocery raffles to tempt dis- cerning visitors, and plenty of photographic interest.
