If you lose the power to laugh, you lose the power to think. -- Clarence Darrow Plug in the river Thank you Kerikeri artist Helen Jean for giving a bit of tongue-in-cheek humour to the Kerikeri Basin. Her Plug is cheekily moored just off the Basin jetty sporting the tra- ditional shiny silver chain. Helen I am sure you have set yourself up to be lauded and criticised -- I can already envisage the letters to the editor. Hold your head high -- well done! Maori cloaks at Haratu, Russell Located on the historic Kororareka Russell water- front, this gallery offers the visitor taonga Maori by local artists, carvers and weavers. During the Rugby World Cup a collection of exquisite Maori cloaks is on show -- not to be missed. Catrina Sutter at South Sea Art Russell Gracefully Grateful is Catrina s latest exhibition of weaving and fibre work incorporating painting. This show has been created over the past 12 months to express her gratitude to the people and places surrounding her. Catrina s weaving and fibre skills are without doubt her strength. However including painting with this in a single work is not a good marriage, giving some pieces a rough- and-ready quality. The just painted works appear nai¨ve and immature -- such a vast contrast from her weaving. Exhibition ends September 25.Lunchtime at The Turner Centre Last Friday featured guitar students and teachers from the Kerikeri School of Music. Although each student performed to the best of their ability and deserves praise for that, this was not one of the best lunchtime concerts I have attended. There was an apparent lack of co- ordination with getting set up between performances and what seemed to be a state of confusion throughout the show, resulting in awkward delays preventing some students from getting to per- form -- how sad. Bishops Wood Jazz Club For all jazz enthusiasts a new jazz club started last Friday in Kerikeri. Jazz musician Reese Helmondollar took the initiative and together with venue owners Richard and Denise Nawisiel- ski they hope this will be the start of regular jazz performances in a casual, friendly atmosphere. For information on future club evenings phone Reese on (09) 401-7083. MAD at The Turner Cen- treAudiences at The Turner Centre on October 1 are in for a rare treat. Following the huge success of its production Coppelia last December, the Northern Dance Academy is collaborating with local artists and local musicians to present Northland Goes MAD, an extravaganza of music, art and dance. The show promises to be a real feast for the senses and a treat for all the family. Performances at 2pm and 7pm. Tickets available from Puttsgreen Florist, Poppies Bookstore or email northern. firstname.lastname@example.org. Phone (09) 401-9140. Whangarei Art Museum An impressive venue and new location in the Town Basin opened last week. The museum is now easy to find with ample parking and a must-visit attraction in Whangarei. Featured in one of the expansive rooms is an outstanding installation of ceramic tiles by Kerikeri art- ist Scott McFarlane titled Zeitgeist. Also featured is renowned potter/ceramicist Richard Parker. Primary school put on Grease You re the one that I want, ooh, ooh, ooh. Kawakawa Primary School s production this year is Grease. The show will be in the school hall, Albert St, Kawakawa, on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday, September 28 to 30, starting at 6.30pm. Come along and make this a family outing that you will talk about for weeks. Dinner is available for purchase from 5pm.
