CAN YOU HELP? EEC_ E E 0078 00 8NOR _NOR One-wheel wonder The maestro: World unicycling champion Christian Huriwai, top right, of Otaua with his master class students in Kaikohe. By EMMA GODWIN Go to www. northernnews.co.nz to see a video of the North American unicycle championships and convention. ONE of the Far North's favourite sons has blown away the compe- tition in the United States with a first equal placing at the North American unicycle championships and convention. Christian Huriwai of Otaua trav- elled to California before heading to Madison, Wisconsin, to compete against American world champion Max Shulze. For the start of the trip I spent my time with friends in California and went unicycling at UCLA and Venice Beach -- they were probably the highlights,'' the 19-year-old says. On the last day in LA I tried to grind a 19-step handrail [three steps more than the world record] which resulted in a badly injured knee.'' After an infection and three day's bed rest, Christian was lucky enough to be able to compete and end the competition with the highest points, taking first equal with Max. Officially first equal, unofficially first place overall because I am not American,'' Christian says. It was an awesome warm-up for the world champs in Italy which will be in June next year.'' Other upcoming competitions for Christian include the national event in Taupo over Labour weekend and the Australian nationals in Mel- bourne. First he is focused on the North- land regionals, the first unicycle event of its kind in New Zealand, on September 10 and 11 at the Mem- orial Hall in Kaikohe. There will be unicycle hockey teams from local schools, a stand from Unicycle.com selling unicycles and parts, and some for people to try out. Contact Christian Huriwai, email@example.com for more information on the regionals.
