Soprano's singing success Singing success: Soprano Maia Vegar with Simon Watson, right, from Whangarei and Matt Wilson from Dunedin. Both are studying with Maia. An Omanaia 20-year-old has returned from the Christchurch Performing Arts senior vocal com- petition with a swag of awards. Soprano Maia Vegar sung in five classes at the awards, held between July 15 and 17. She won two of her classes and was placed second in two others. The Christchurch competition is the second biggest vocal compe- tition in the South Island and home turf of Dame Malvina Major, the leading singing teacher at Canterbury University. This year's adjudicator was Marie Landis. Maia is in her second year at Otago University studying classi- cal performance voice, under the tuition of singing teacher Judy Bellingham. She aims to be an opera singer. She has performed previously with Whangarei Theatre Com- pany productions, Opera North and Sweet Pea Productions. Singers visit Broadway for concert For its concert at the Turner Centre on August 20 the Bay of Islands Singers is offering some- thing different. The event will be a real con- trast to its last concert of baroque music. The singers have turned their attention to music of the New World, with a programme which traces the roots of American music from early folk and plan- tation songs to gospel and bar- bershop to music from the swing era and the ever popular Broadway musical. The concert will include songs from Oklahoma, Carousel, Fid- dler on the Roof and West Side Story. It will be a great evening of familiar tunes, catchy rhythms, close harmonies and lyrical ten- derness. The SilverDollar Jazz Band with Matt Watson on piano will provide the backing and also perform classic instru- mental numbers from ragtime, Dixieland, swing and beyond. The Bay of Islands Singers concert will be held in the Turner Centre downstairs events hall at 7.30pm.
