FREE FOR WOMEN AGED 45 to 69 Drab to fab: Plans under way for Kaikohe's library square. Walkway gives way to new town square A drab pedestrian walkway marred by graffiti and broken windows will be transformed into a vibrant town square in the centre of Kaikohe. At the July creative communities workshop, members of the com- munity board brainstor- med simple yet effective ways to enhance Kai- kohe. We discussed ways to harness the potential of our town and, with mini- mum financial invest- ment, generate maxi- mum output,'' Kaikohe Community Board chair- man Win Stephens says. The board decided to create a safe, social and cultural space in the heart of the town and Library Square was the obvious location. The playground in the Library Square is due for an update and this is a good opportunity to revamp the whole square,'' Mr Stephens says. The toilets will be taken down and modern facilities will be built on Dickeson St. New paving will be laid, walkway canopies will be upgraded and the board would like to adorn the square with pou. Mr Stephens is in talks with a local carver and he hopes the runa- nga will become involved in the project as well. Hanging baskets in Broadway will be banished as funds are transferred to the new library square project. The hanging basket sys- tem needs an expensive overhaul and the money can be better spent to create a great com- munity space,'' Mr Ste- phens says. We can't afford to do everything at once; this will be an ongoing proj- ect. In the end we will have a safe family- friendly space for the people of Kaikohe to enjoy and be proud of.''
