It wasn t only Kawakawa s Vin- tage Rail Trust celebrating on Saturday. The historic Star Hotel was packed to the gunwales with punters eager to celebrate the hotel s 132 years in business. Owned by Brooke Jameison and managed by recently moved Timaru couple Frank and Eleanor Gardiner, a newspaper clipping of the day says the hotel was opened on April 19, 1879. Mr Gardiner said it was a cel- ebration of the two oldest busi- nesses in town -- the railway and the pub -- both of which had been the centre of community life for more than 100 years. National names five Five people will fight for the right to represent National in the Northland electorate at the general election on Nov- ember 26. The party has confirmed Sarah Davies, Matt King, Ken Rintoul, Mike Sabin and Mark Tan as nominees after considering about 10 people as replacements for retiring MP John Carter. Party delegates in North- land will vote for their pre- ferred candidate at a meeting in Kaikohe on April 30. Electorate chairwoman Sally Macauley says the com- mittee followed correct pro- cess in selecting the five nominees. The National Party is all about local democracy. We ve implemented the first step and now it s over to the 275 delegates. Meanwhile, Labour North- land candidate Lynette Stew- art has been ranked 39th out of the 41 candidates on Labour s party list announced on April 10. Te Tai Tokerau electorate candidate Kelvin Davis was ranked 23rd on the Labour list after being ranked 29th at the 2008 election. Former Northland candi- date Shane Jones held his 2008 position of 16th place after a drop to 21st place and promotion to 13th in a re- shuffle of the Labour shadow cabinet in February. Name a favourite community group Can the Far North take the top prize again at next year s TrustPower Com- munity Awards? Nominations for the awards, which were won by the Bay of Islands Vintage Rail- way Trust this year, opened last week. People have until June 17 to nominate a community group or organisation for an award under five categories: Heritage and En- vironment Health and Well- being Arts and Culture Sport and Leisure Educational and child/youth develop- ment. The supreme win- ner will win $1500 and an all-expenses-paid trip to the TrustPower National Community Awards in Ashburton in March 2012. Category winners and runners-up will receive $500 and $250 respectively. Organiser Suzi Luff says 72 groups were nominated for the Far North awards last year, but more deserve recognition. The Far North has something special going on. Every year, more groups surface that are doing am- azing things for the benefit of the entire community. She encourages people to nominate a group that has worked hard to improve the community. It takes five min- utes of your time to nominate a voluntary group, but it will make a real difference to the volunteers. New directors step up New directors have been appointed to take over the reins of Far North District Council trading firm Far North Holdings. The directorships of Tony Norman, Ken Rintoul and Shane Lloydd expired last Thursday amid rumours that the council planned to refocus the company to make it return bigger dividends to the council. The new board will be headed by Russell business- man Ross Blackman who co- founded and was chief execu- tive of America s Cup Team New Zealand. He will be joined by: Auckland-based barrister, solicitor and multi- millionaire venture capitalist Bill Birnie Northland Regional Coun- cillor and farmer and agri- cultural lobbyist Ian Walker Far North District Council- lor and property valuer Steve McNally. The appointments, which were confirmed by the council last Thursday and took effect from Saturday, increase the number of directors on the board from three to four. Mr Blackman and Mr Birnie have been appointed for three-year terms, Mr Walker for two years and Mr McNally for one year. Varying the terms gives the council the option of reviewing board membership annually. Shane Lloydd was offered a new term on the board but declined.
