Waipapa link on the agenda The Far North District Council is looking to develop a new road to link Klinac Lane with Waipapa Loop Rd, depending on the availability of roading subsidies. It is also working with the New Zealand Transport Agency, for the long-awaited up- grade of the intersec- tion of State Highway 10 with Waipapa Rd and Waipapa Loop Rd through a roundabout. Land required for this project is still being acquired and the project will be raised with the Regional Land Transport Com- mittee. The projects are listed in the Far North District Council draft annual plan, now open for public comment. The council says that in preparing the plan it has been aware of the economic cli- mate and has kept all expenditures to an absolute minimum to avoid unnecessary rate rises and keep debt levels down. Capital projects deferred include in- vestigations of options for a new road linking Kapiro Rd with Wai- papa Rd. The council asks anyone who is asking for this or any other deferred project to be reinstated to consider alternative projects that could be deferred to avoid a need for a rates increase. Cerato hatch -- a great buy Two extra gears, an additional door and some small running changes turn Kia's Cerato into a class-leader, writes Dave Moore KIA 5-DOOR 6-speed auto Theta II engine Output: 115kW 385-litres of space LX: $30,490 SX: add $4500 When Kia launched its sharp-looking Cerato sedan, I remarked at the time that it was about two gears and a hatch short of being the right car for New Zealand. That s because to be successful in the C-segment, you ll do bet- ter with a six-speed five- door than a four-speed sedan. Kia will also have noticed how the segment s biggest player, the Corolla, sells about five hatches for every sedan in New Zealand, most of them automatics. So in comes the five- door hatch version of the Kia Cerato, which now packs a six-speed auto- matic and some running improvements to the cabin and its handling and refinement. The Cerato hatch has the same wheelbase as the sedan, but it s 190mm shorter overall. However this doesn t compromise load space too much and in our hatch-centric market it s one of the best with a useful 385 litres of vol- ume, even with the fold- flat seats in place. The hatch comes in two specification levels, the LX and SX. The LX is $30,490, but for that, as well as the new six-speed automatic, it gets 16-inch alloy wheels, front, side and curtain airbags, air con- ditioning, a multi- function steering wheel with controls for the six- speaker sound system, cruise control and Bluetooth, a dual trip meter, and ambient tem- perature display. There s an MP3- compatible CD player with USB inputs. The SX asks another $4500 for leather upholstery, driving lamps, paddle-shifters for the automatic, cli- mate air conditioning and more sporting 17-inch alloy wheels. Both cars retain the sedan s 115kW Theta II engine, and with six speeds to run though it s far more brisk and the Cerato feels more like what it is: The most powerful hatch in the sub 2-litre C-segment. The automatic has sport and normal modes, and yes, you can tell the difference, though the paddle-shifters in the SX model are more a novelty. I used them for a day or so, but then left the crisp automatic to its own devices. While it s not going to rewrite the class hand- ling textbook led by the Focus and Golf, it s at least as good as anything else out there. The Cerato hatch is hands down the best and most honest buy in its class. This Yeti's a family car Skoda s Yeti, arguably the best all-round family runabout on the market is now available in its least expensive form in New Zealand. With the same 2WD 77kW 1.2-TSi 7-speed DSG drivetrain as that used by VW s World Car of the Year, the Polo, the Yeti starts at $37,500. The 2.0-TDI 4x4 Yeti continues at $48,000 with DSG and $45,500 in manual.
