About the Arts with MIKE NETTMANN At 95 you have no peer pressure. -- Russ Garcia Art for Christchurch A reminder to all art lovers and anyone want- ing to help raise funds for Christchurch that there are two art auctions coming up. Out of the Rubble is now open at Kaan Zamaan Kerikeri for viewing with a silent auction in place until Sunday when the auc- tion proper starts at 2pm. Waitaha Conference Centre at the Copthorne Hotel, Waitangi, has a silent auction from April 18 to 22. There are some fabulous artworks included in these auctions. Give your sup- port to a worthy cause. Conversations on Human Rights -- Paihia Library This remarkable installation is non- confrontational, non- aggressive and presented in a thought-provoking friendly manner, accom- panied by curator Briar Bentley s beautiful pho- tography. Briar has also added personal evolving inter- pretations to each of the 30 Articles, encouraging interaction and dialogue with viewers. Post-it notes written by the pub- lic from the Whangarei exhibition have been collated and are on view. Viewers are encouraged to express their thoughts and reactions. Briar will be at the library most days until April 16 to talk to. Neil Ieremia and Russ Garcia at the Turner Centre Genius -- I use the accolade sparingly. Within a week I have witnessed the extraord- inary talents of two men I happily place in the realm of genius. Neil Ieremia is the artistic director- choreographer for New Zealand s highly acclaimed dance troupe Black Grace which wowed us last Thursday with a collection of short works in which Neil plays and experiments with new ideas, to find new movement vocabu- lary and ways of working with his dancers. Verses was a thrilling work of artistic ingenuity, pre- cision and synchronicity. Last Saturday Russ Garcia celebrated his 95th birthday with friends and admirers conducting a memorable concert giving an insight into his extraordinary creative genius and genial personality -- love that naughty humour. The show also featured New York singer Shaynee Rainbolt whose interpretation of Russ compositions and Gina Garcia s lyrics was simply sublime, with the perfect voice. Terese Genecco who has the longest running show on Broadway is a delight with an ebullient personality and great jazz vocals. Host Tim Beveridge nailed All The Things You Are. And what a band -- most of NZ s top jazz musicians featuring a four trom- bone section. Thank you Neil and Russ, take a bow! Exhibitions worth visiting Objects of Desire is another evocative exhi- bition by Hokianga artists including a stun- ning installation of wire crowns by Susan Camp- bell at Village Arts Kohukohu. This gallery never fails to impress me! Until April 28. Prints by members of the open access Abery- stwyth Print Workshop in Wales, at Art at Wharepuke Kerikeri Rd, is a new exhibition that continues its series of international shows with a diverse selection of subjects and print techniques. Until May 1.
