Fundraiser ropes in support for our cowboy Ramoan Neho of Te Hapua is representing New Zealand in the Saddle Bronc event at Australia s Royal Sydney Show. The 20-year-old is one of New Zealand s top rodeo riders and is best described as a multi- event cowboy who com- petes in bull rides, saddle bronc rides and steer wrestling. Ramoan heads across the ditch on April 13 where he will be compet- ing for three days with selected cowboys from Australia, Canada, the United States and New Zealand. To help Ramoan in his travels to Australia, Oruru Valley Rodeo Club in conjunction with the Far North Rodeo Club are holding a fundraising Time Events Jackpot and rodeo demonstration on April 2. The venue is the Far North Rodeo arena located at the Mangonui A & P grounds South Rd, Kaitaia, from 11am. Events will include team roping, calf roping, barrel racing and steer wrestling, along with a saddle bronc riding demonstration. These events will be open for anyone keen to have a go, whether a seasoned pro or a first- timer. Entries will be taken from 10am with a portion of the price being donated to Ramoan. There will also be food and cold drinks on sale, the proceeds of which will be donated to Ramoan. Everyone is welcome tohaveagoorjustsit back and watch. Chris sails away with award Supreme sailor: Opua man Chris Hornell with his trophy for Northland Sailor of the Year. Chris Hornell has been named Northland Sailor of the Year for 2010. The Opua Cruising Club member and Bay of Islands Marine Centre owner was nominated for the annual Northland Regional Council award by the Northland Yacht- ing Association. Regional council chair- man Craig Brown says the yachting association had described Hornell as a popular, top- performing sailor and a good club man who is a great ambassador for the sport . An experienced off- shore competitor, Mr Hornell s more recent achievements included participating in last year s Auckland to Denerau (Fiji) yacht race. His 12-metre yacht Revs was the first fully crewed vessel to finish on handicap. He has also competed in 20 Coastal Classic (Auckland-Russell) yacht races and was second overall under the IRC handicapping system in the 2010 Bay of Islands Sailing Week regatta held early last year. Hornell says he feels very privileged to receive an award that has not only been held by some great sportspeople, but many others who had also given a lot of energy to the sport. He intends to continue that tradition and has already been asked to visit local schools to show pupils the trophy he won and to chat to them about his yachting experiences.
