8 NORTHERN NEWS, MARCH 16, 2011 NEWS Three happy residents. Dick (71) and Edith (60) Van der Scheer have lived in a villa at Vision Bay of Islands with Inca (9) since November 2008. Nice to meet you all Inca is part of the family, even coming on holiday with us -- our children joke she has been to more places than them. Background We came out from Holland in 1980 with our three kids. The plan was to buy a motel, but we bought an orchard instead -- it was a great place to raise a family. We've also owned a shop and Dick has worked in the local retirement village and the hospice (which he helped establish). Then ten years ago, he was diagnosed with Parkinson's Disease. Recent achievements Dick is widely known for his volunteer work, which continues regardless of his own challenges. He has been recognised with The Citizens Award from The Far North District Council for his ser vices to the Hospice and the Ron Greenwood Community Spirit Award from Parkinson's New Zealand. Interests Most days Dick takes Inca to the Hospice -- the residents really enjoy the visits. I help out in the SPCA shop. We also see a lot of our grandchildren and love to travel. Why here? We had our eye on Vision Bay of Islands from the start. We love our villa. It's so sunny and warm with a lovely garden which is fully maintained for us. The village is well managed and the other residents are so nice. Of course, a major reason for us was being able to bring Inca. Advice to others Don't wait too long or think you're too young. You can do the same things here you do now. It's the people that make a Vision village.
