ABOUT THE ARTS WITH MIKE NETTMANN An artist is not paid for his labour but for his vision -- Whistler Just Imagine Gallery, Russell It is always a treat visiting this gallery with its eclectic selection of refined art pieces. The gallery not only presents unique and beautiful objects, but does so in a well organised and uncluttered manner and their coffee is simply superb. If you are lucky enough to be there when owner Cris Aronson is on duty get her to give you the tour. She is very know- ledgeable on all the art, artists and their techniques. Of all the fine artists fea- tured in the gallery I have chosen to highlight the work of Whangarei glass artist Justin Culina. His vases are not only functional but also exquisite art pieces that can be displayed in a variety of ways. His work is elegant with stunning, luxurious colour and no elaborate patterning or decoration. Justin masterfully captures the spirit of the glass in simple forms. Just Imagine is also well known for the shows it hosts and coming up on March 19 is The Jade Quartet who should not be missed. I have heard them once before in Russell. While in Russell make sure you also visit the newly renovated South Sea Art, and a little further down the street Entrance Gallery and behind the museum Haratu Gallery. There has been a lot on in the past few weeks -- here are the other exhibitions I have seen and recommend: Village Arts Kohukohu, Jill Reilly -- Some are Obsessions, a fascinating and possibly dis- turbing view of the artist's psyche. At the same gallery, a delightful installation by Bev Cox -- Botanical Notebook, where she has transformed the little room'' into a botan- ical artist's study including her accomplished drawings. Rawene Gallery has Wai- tangi, an excellent group show with the theme percep- tions of identity, place and history. It is remarkable what can be achieved with mud, clay, ink, fabric and stained glass to name but a few of the mediums these wonderfully creative artists have used. Art at Wharepuke, Keri- keri has a fascinating series of student prints that were created recently at the Seacourt Print Workshop in Bangor, Northern Ireland and tutored by Kerikeri's master printmaker Mark Graver. Loft Kerikeri showcases fabulous sea photography by Dean Wright. Art Upstairs Kerikeri features a selection of charm- ing and some evocative water paintings. Origin Kerikeri also has a water theme for their show The Sea and all it Brings.
