Close racing: Ray Dare 888 and Bruce Mallindine 49 in the Production men's class. The Hussler: John Hussy in 27 leads Max Andresen in 58 around cemetery bend. A hot and muggy Wai- tangi Day saw another good turnout of drivers and supporters at Kai- kohe Speedway track. A fast track made for some great tight racing during the course of the day. It was great to see visiting drivers from Maramarua, Auckland, Kaitaia and Taipa come along to join the local boys for a play. It was also great to see the new Super Pro- duction cars join the action on the track. Visitor numbers were down a little because of the Waitangi Day cele- brations. First out were the Pro- duction and Super Pro- duction men in a field of 10 cars. Racing was tight with Ray Dare in 888 working his way through the pack to take the win. Then Bruce Mallin- dine came up with a win in his new Super Pro leaving Tony in 103, Max in 85 and Grant in 777 competing for the brides- maid positions. The big cars had a mixed grade of Super Saloon and Limiteds with Mad Max Andresen in 58 taking the win for the Supers. Visiting driver Terry Grigs in 12 won the Limited class. Round two saw a furi- ous battle between The Hussler (aka John Hussy) in 27 and Max Andresen in 58 with racing so close at times that the vehicles wheels were inside each others. John emerged the victor. In the C Grade, drivers Sonny Haliday in 56 and Steve Peers in 50 tussled for the major positions with novice driver Becks Potherwell in 8 taking the lesser placing. It was great to see Colin Lea in his historic midget passing the newer cars and rearing around the corners to take an easy win. Production Ladies had Michaela Beadle-Price take her first win (from her mum Debbie in 103) in her pink car 102 with Debbie in second and Didi Roycroft in 8 and Melissa Timoti in 38 set- tling for the minor placings. Plans are under way for Kaikohe Car Club s famous Easter Stampede featuring Circle Track Racing Association of New Zealand titles over Easter weekend, April 22 to 24. This will be a great family weekend with three days of hard-out racing. Entries are already coming in for this hugely popular event. Club members will also be representing their home track on February 20 and 21 at the Northland champs in Dargaville. The club hopes to bring pres- tigious trophies back for the home club cabinet. Kaikohe Car Club s next domestic race at Kaikohe Speedway is on February 27 at 1pm. Visit www.kaikohecar club.com for updated information. Event celebrates the bike On yer bike: It's Go By Bike Day today. Today is Go By Bike Day! It s part of Bike Wise Month -- New Zealand s annual cele- bration of the bicycle. It is a nationwide event encouraging Kiwis to swap the car, bus or train for pedal power to see how easy and fun commuting to work or school by bike can be. The day is one of more than 100 cycling events being held around the country during February and includes: Mayoral Challenge (weekends throughout February) -- a national event in which towns and cities compete for the title of Cycle Mad City by attempting to get the most people to take part in a fun ride behind the local mayor. Bike Wise Challenge (until February 28) -- an online competition in which businesses sign up and compete to see which can get the greatest proportion of staff to ride at least 2km during the month. Bike Wise Month is a New Zealand Trans- port Agency and Health Ministry initia- tive. Information and de- tails are available at www.bikewise.co.nz.
